    - Report Builder and optional parameters Denis, I ran into this same problem today and spent sometime trying to come up with a solution or hack. The problem is report builder does not allow access to the parameters collection nor do you have the ability to add a parameter when you choose to create a filter formula. I was able to get around this limitation by following the below steps. I did run a trace after making the changes and the SQL statement that reporting services created was what I was expecting. I verified the solution with a string field filtering by equality and contains. 1. With the filter edit form open add a field to the filter. 2. Right click on the field and choose "Prompt" 3. Right click on the comparison operator and choose "From...To". This is a key step as it will create two parameter values to work with. 4. Right click on the filed name again, but choose "Edit as Formula" this time. 5. In the formula text box update the text as follows. Note* you can not delete the parameter names. You must type the formula without removing the existing parameters. The FIND operator converts the formula to a version of an SQL LIKE clause. OR(FIND(<<field name>>,<<param name>>) <> 0, <<param name>> = EMPTY) The above formula will return all rows if the "NULL" check box is left checked and no filter is specified. If a filter is specified, it will return only records that contain the filter. The above formula will produce the below SQL statement WHERE (NOT(ISNULL(CHARINDEX(<<param name>>,<<field name>>), 0) = CAST(0 AS INT)) OR <<param name>> IS NULL) If anyone else has come across this problem and found a more elegant solution, please post. If that key is set to 1, then set it to 0 and it should fix your problem.     - New Log or append? My opinion, I'd create DB Maint Plans to do database and trans log backups, and not write my own, unless there is some real good reason to. Main plans aren't perfect, but still better then trying to reproduce the same end result. One of the points of backing up the trans log is for disaster recovery. You could backup your trans log every 30 minutes, then copy/move those backups off to a different server/tape, etc... So, I wouldn't stack them on one file, becuase you need to move them continually to a different box, or yea, backup cross server, ehhhh.... I prefer local backups and then copying them somewhere else, like with RoboCopy. The times you nee the trans logs are for recovery, or to do log shipping to a different server (similar concept to database mirroring, but still more in use then mirroring is I think). If doing a full backup every 6 hours, same thing, back it up and move it off somewhere safe, not leave that on teh same drives as your database files! I'd still leave the old TRN files on teh other location, there COULD be a case where you need to go back 9 hours, then you'd have the old trans and backups to get there, I wouldnt delete the TRN files every 6 hours as you said.     - Issues importing from Visual FoxPro 7 I'm trying to bulk load tables in SQL 2005 from a Visual FoxPro 7 database. We have the latest VFP OLE DB driver loaded and have run into an odd issue. When viewed from the table designer in VFP the tables have all columns set to not null (null column is not checked). However there are lots of rows with "empty" values for columns with both numeric and date data types. When I select these columns from an ODBC test app with the old (version 6.something) odbc driver they are filled with spaces. When I run a select on the tables from SQL 2005 these "empty" values come back as a default value based on the columns data type; 0 for numeric columns and 12/30/1899 for date fields. Now, for the first question, from the OLE DB side of things, is there a way to prevent the OLE DB driver from manufacturing data I can use a case statement to catch and remove the default date as 12/30/1899 isn't in the data. But there is no way to know when a returned 0 for a numeric field is a a valid value and when it was stuffed because the so-called non-null field had no value in it. Or if not, part two, can the old version 6 odbc driver be used from SQL 2005 I have a system DSN defined that works from an ODBC test app when using ODBC 2.0 syntax, but SQL 2005 doesn't seem to want to connect to it. linked server created with: EXEC master . dbo . sp_addlinkedserver 'ODBCLINKTEST' , '' , 'MSDASQL' , 'SystemDSN' and the query results... select * from [odbclinktest] ...tablename Msg 7313, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 An invalid schema or catalog was specified for the provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "odbclinktest". Looking at your definition, I would creaste multiple datasets and probably stick to returning 3 columns in my dataset and using a table for the layout rather than a matrix as they are more flexible. This makes sense as your number of columns does not need to expand dynamically which is what a matrix is really meant for. You should also consider whether you will add a date parameter to do "as at" queries or whether you will just use GETDATE() to get the current date and time. They are empty cells which are equivalent to 0 and I think '1899-12-30 00:00:00.000' is the 0 value for the datetime data type. But then again dates don't really aggregate that well. When I try to return all rows from a view or table by selecting Open Table|Return All Rows from the context menu, I get a dialog in the middle of EM stating:

An unexpected error happened during this operation.

[MS Visual Database Tools] - The parameter is incorrect.

Any ideas

This could be due to the Enterprise Manager trying to return too many rows that the client machine unable to cope up, you might try from a query analyzer to list the rows which is a recommended way. Also you can test on another machine to see whether it reproduces the same, also apply the recommended service pack to client tools too.

This does occur on more than one machine. What is the recommended service pack for the client tools I don't recall seeing a service pack for the client tools, just sql server. I'm already patched to sp4.

Yes you need to have service pack on client tools, that helps too.

I do on all of my client tools too without any issues.
