Hi Every One,

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 on Windows Vista Home Premium edition, when I run the Installer I received  are the following error message.

 IIS Feature Requirement (Warning)

Messages

IIS Feature Requirement

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online.

I already configure IIS7 with all feature, but system still generate above mentioned message.

Hi Abdul,

I know you said you've already configured IIS7 with all features, but could you verify that using the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920201/en-us (The article says beta, but it should still apply to the released version of Vista.) I had the same problem you describe and it was resolved by having the correct IIS components selected as specified by the article.

I'm getting the same warning when I attempt to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2. The install proceeds, but Reporting Services (more imporant to me) and Full-Text Search (less important to me) are not installed.

I used the Windows Features applet and selected all of the Internet Information Services items that are listed in KB Article 920201, with the exception of "Windows Authentication", which is not in my list. ("IIS Metabase" and "IIS 6 WMI" are worded slightly different--"IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility" and "IIS 6 WMI Compatibility", respectively--but I did select them both.) When I re-ran the SQLEXPR_ADV installer, I got the same warning...and Reporting Services and Full-Text Search were not installed.

I even went back into the Windows Features applet and selected all remaining unselected "Internet Information Services" items, and then re-ran the SQLEXPR_ADV installer. I got the same warning...and Reporting Services and Full-Text Search were not installed.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be

I am having the exact problem as you are and tried the iis settings in KB Article 92020, still Reporting Services. Have you made any progress

Since the original thread was a bit dated and the title was a bit generic, I started my own thread entitled "Can't install Reporting Services and Full-Text Search on Windows Vista". Jen Suessmeyer, an MVP, added the following message to that thread:

You should , see the blog entry from Brian Welcker:
http://blogs.msdn.com/bwelcker/archive/2007/03/19/candy-apple-grey-installing-ssrs-and-windows-vista.aspx

"Note that IIS7 in Vista Home Premium does not include Windows Authentication functionality so it will not work with SSRS."

Sure enough, that blog entry is crystal clear. It would have been nice for the SQL Server 2005 SP2 Readme (especially the "Installation Requirements" section and/or the "Reporting Considerations for Windows Vista" section) to mention this requirement/limitation. I reviewed that document numerous times, without improvement.

I've been considering upgrading to Vista Ultimate; this makes my decision easier.

Thanks for the update, Ultimate will handle SRS

Apparently; that's the gist of the blog entry.

I'm upgrading to Ultimate now and will post back here with the results.

Here's the latest: I used WindowsAnytimeUpdate.com to purchase Vista Ultimate for my three-week old PC. After payment was made, the download process kept returning me to the initial offering web page. After the fourth attempt, it finally proceeded normally.

The Ultimate install ran for about an hour, during which the messages made it almost appear that my existing Vista installation was being wiped out. Fortunately, that was not the case--or was it, I say half-kiddingly Upon the completion of the install and final reboot, I noticed the following:

  • many of my system-wide settings had been reset (Default email client, Start > Run history, IE settings, etc.)
  • the Windows Sidebar crashed and re-launched
  • all of the IIS features I had previously installed were no longer installed (Windows Authentication was now listed as an IIS option; however, I got an ambiguous error when I attempted to install IIS)
  • my on-board audio device is no longer detected (although no errors appear within Device Manager)

Not a very user-friendly experience; and that's just the *obvious* things I noticed!

After another reboot, the Windows Sidebar no longer crashed. I attempted to install IIS a second time; this time, it ran without a problem. A quick call to Dell technical support got the on-board audio device issue resolved.

Next, I re-ran SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2. The System Configuration Check displayed the same warning about IIS being disabled or not being installed. I continued anyway. Sure enough, the Feature Selection list did not display Reporting Services as an option. On the plus side: At least it no longer listed Reporting Services as an option, let me select it, and then not install it without any error message!

So at this point, I still haven't been able to install Reporting Services. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

Hi

This forum is the only one which speaks about the major problem I am facing and my question: Does Analysis Services work with Windows Vista home premium or not

I was not able until now to find a clear answer so I really regret to have bought Vista because SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services worked perfectly well with Windows XP.

When I instal SQL Server 2005, I have the same warning than you about the fact that IIS is not installed. Indeed it is installed, but with the Vista Home premium version the Windows authentification feature is missing.

That could be the reason why when I built-up a cube within Analysis Services and I wan to process it, I have constantly the error message that the OLAP server does not exist.

In fact it seems that the server is refusing tho be accessed, because my version of IIS does not have the windows authorisation feature.

My reasoning is only from deduction but I am very surprised that Microsoft is not clear about that.

Can somebody tell me whether I am right or wrong and how I can solve the problem e.g. to be able to access the OLAP server with SQL Server 2005 installe on Vista home premium

Thanks a lot in advance for your kind help.

Hi cgwaters

Thanks a million. I ran into the same problem (which had me scratching my head) .

Just out of curiosity one was to buy "Ultimate", do you happen to know if you can install it as and "upgrade" from home premium or does one have to reformat the hard disc right from the start.

You also mentioned that you were upgrading to "Ultimate".

If you have already upgraded....did this resolve the problem of installing Reporting Services 2005 or did you find more "Gotchas "

Once again thanks for the posting. You saved me hours Smile

regards Steve

Steve, Ultimate upgraded my Home Premium; it did not reformat the hard drive.

Unfortunately, upgrading to Ultimate did not resolve the problem that was/is preventing Reporting Services from installing.

Please see my other thread "Can't install Reporting Services and Full-Text Search on Windows Vista", where I listed more details. I am waiting for someone more knowledgeable / experienced than me to reply.

Any update on this I am on Home Premium and thinking of upgrading to premium but don't want to bother if it isn't going to help.

Re: SQL Server 2005 Installation On Windows Vista Home Premium

It's very strange. Some users report that after upgrading to Ultimate, they had no trouble installing SSRS. Other users report that they also had to enable the settings that Brian Welcker listed in his blog entry (see the URL earlier in this thead); that didn't work for me. Still other users report that they also had to enable *every* checkbox under IIS; I haven't tried that yet, but it's on my list of things to try. But even *that* step didn't work for some users.

I can't "turn on" the following features in Vista:

IIS6 Managment Console

FTP Managment Console

FTP Server
