Hi -

Who else had received this error during Windows update I'm running Vista ultimate. There are a couple of posts on google, but no solutions yet.

To my knowledge, no one on this forum is clarvoyant, so you'll need to post the details of the error you're getting in order to get any help. There is a known issue if you have ACT! 2007 installed that it cannot be patched correctly because of the way the ACT! product installs SQL Express. There should be an update from ACT! in the next several weeks that will correctly apply the update. If you don't have ACT! installed I'm interested in understanding the problem you're seeing.

Thanks for the interest!

I run Windows Update and it says it wants to install the following update:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)
Download size: 56.4 MB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
Update type: Important
This service pack upgrades all Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition instances and components to Service Pack 2 (SP2). If you need additional installation options, you should download this service pack at the Microsoft Download Center. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 921896.
More information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921896

I tell it to install and it downloads the updates, does the "preparing to install", does "installing updates", and then reports:

Some updates were not installed
Failed: 1 update
Error(s) found:
Code 65B <Get help>

("Get help" is a link that does a search for "WindowsUpdate_0000065B WindowsUpdate_dt000", but doesn't find anything on this error.)

You'll probably want more information about what's installed on the machine. I can't really remember everything I did. It's my .NET 3.0 development box and I installed it according to Tim Sneath's Building a Perfect WPF Developer Workstation updated it as updates were available.

If there's any information I can provide, I will be happy to. (Although, if you ask a question like "What version of SQL Express do you have ", I'll probably need some advice how how to best find and provide that kind of information.)

Mike - Thanks for the reply. Clarvoyancy - hmmm. Well, I also get an event log error 0x80070643 when viewing details on the Code 65B. I do not have any version of ACT! installed. Perhaps there may be some more details available on my system that I could provide if you could point me in the right direction.

It would help to have a look at the install log file, they are located in the setup log folder at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG. If this is the update comming from Microsoft Update, you'll want to look in the Hotfix folder and check out summary.txt.

Re: SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 2 - Error 65B

Mike Wachal - MSFT

Hi Folks,

I've been investigating this with our setup team and we need more information to help us investigate. Mostly we need the complete set of log files from the directory listed in the Summary.txt file that you've posted. Rather than try to manage this via e-mail, or through posting complete logs in the forum, I'd like to use Microsoft Connect:

  1. Navigate to https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer.
  2. Register if you haven't already.
  3. Submit feedback for this issue and attach the logs for the failure.

This will create a trackable item in our system and allow me to drive this through the investigation process. Feel free to let me know when you've done this so I can go and find your feedback item.

Mike

Mike - I've submitted the feedback with a zip of the log files. Feedback ID 274577. Let me know if you need more info.

Re: SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 2 - Error 65B

I don't see a way for me to add additional attachments to an existing feedback item. Do you want additional sets of logs files Should I open a new feedback item to put them up there

Re: SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 2 - Error 65B

Mike Wachal - MSFT

For folks who are experiencing this problem on Windows Vista, the problem is likely related to some issues with Reporting Services. (At lease one set of logs submitted clearly showed this.) There is a KB article explaining how to handle the Vista upgrade of RS at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934163/en-us. Take a look at that and tell me if that resolve the problems you're seeing.

Mike

I feel a little stupid, but I'm afraid I still don't see how to add attachments to that feedback item. I was able to add a "yes" vote to the validation (jss2), but I can't figure out how to add an attachment. Is only the creator of the item allowed to add attachments

In regards to the Reporting Services question, as far as I know, I don't have Reporting Services installed.
