Hi,

is there any update on the subject

Jet has it for ages.

I want to use Scrollable/Updateable Cursors & OLEDB Rowsets opened via Select query.

Last time I have heard that MSFT is planning to add this in the future.

Is there a beta version that I can try

Thanks,

Konstantin

As far as I know, this is not yet supported by the OLE DB provider for SQL Compact Edition 3.1. With (quite) a bit of work you can work around this by reading the SELECT schema information and creating a base table cursor on the same table using whatever unique index is supported by the returned rows to position the cursor for inserts, updates and deletes.

This workaround is too complex.

I'm wondering when this feature will be implemented by MSFT

As far as I know, all MSFT need to do - is just port some blocks of code from the big brother (SQL Server 2005 OLEDB provider).

Any update

Will MS add this feature

If yes, when

From what I see development around databases is rapidly shifting towards managed code and this feature is already available to managed code developers in form of SqlCeResultSet class.

So which one you believe is more likely:

a) Older API would be extended for a few developers still using it.

b) Older API would be left alone to die a horrible lonely death.

I¡¯m betting b) is the correct one. That might change if database developers would switch en masse to C++ and OLEDB but I would guess that¡¯s not that likely.

Ok. If MS does not care about 'few' C++ developers, we can easily switch to another DB engine.

It's not about ¡°care for C++ developers¡±; it's about cost vs. benefits. There¡¯s indeed huge army of C++ developers but only relatively small fraction is using databases and even less are doing fairly complex things which would require scrollable updatable cursor. Just check out this very forum and you¡¯ll see C++ developers are minority by far here. In any case you¡¯re always welcome to file a feature request on http://connect.microsoft.com/ and it would be considered for a next release.

And you do have a good point. Competition is a wonderful thing; just pick another database if you¡¯re not satisfied.

I have an old and huge project that requires scrollable updatable OLEDB cursor.

It works fine with normal SQL Server, Access, Oracle and MySQL.

But not with SQL Server Compact. And I guess it never will. Pity.
