    - DB does not autogrow I never thought about changing the growth to not be in percent... the database is a "load" database so it typically does not change too much but we have been adding more tasks to it so I am sure it will be growing steadily. I am going to give the change of growth a shot and see how it is... I am also trying to track down where the shrinking is being done from so once the database is set it will not be shrunk. I've deployed other reports accesing sql server with no problem. Now I deploy the report and try to access my Oracle source and get: System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater On the server in question, I know they've installed the oracle client. I can access the db from sql plus with no problem. As the user that I access ssrs credentials, i remote login and am able to write to oracle home.. We have still not influenced the optimiser to do the star joins as cartesian products. And that may be because from the stats point of view the optimiser believes that the scan is going to cost less. I did have a question about partitions.... I was thinking...or hoping...that it would be possible to specify two columns in the partitioning scheme.....for reasons I won't go into...I want to be able to house many fact tables in a single table and partition by fact table number....then I also want to be able to partition by the day dimension key to slice data up into periods based on the calendar months........of course, the usual approach is to have a separate table for each fact table and then you only need one partitioning key and then the table can be clustered on the day dimension id.... I am considering clustering on the fact table number and the day dimension id and rather hoping that SQL server can figure this out... But from the reading of the manual it looks like one number is all I get to do partitioning....and I am reluctant to make the partitioning key a calculated column because I figure that has got to make for a slower query.....though it is only a hunch....for example I could make the partitioning number the fact table number * 1,000,000 and then add the day dim id....because I am not going to be here in 1M days to worry about the key clashes...LOL!     - Login Failed for <domain name>\<Machine Name> You mentioned it might be running as Network Service. A process running as Network Service, Local Service or Local System on one machine will log on using the machine account - i.e. [domain name]\[machine name] when connecting to another machine. This is a perfectly reasonable setup, which can be made to work by granting the machine account permissions in your database(s), though it may also involve setting the AD option 'Trust for Delegation' onn the account. So when using a SQL client tool's query window, declaring and setting variables are separate statements. And as you see, the action statement includes the variable or parameter. However, your application will replace the application variable (or control.text) with the actual value when it sends the statement to SQL Server. (SQL Server would not have privy to the variable declaration and value assignment on the application side.) Profiler will capture the statement with the actual values when sent from the application. In order to use Profiler as a auditing tool, all SQL statements must come from the client. As you have noticed, stored procedures, functions, and scripts present significant problems for an attempt at auditing.     - aspnet_wp.exe crashing intermittently I have an application which is providing printing facility using a custom hardware interface device. Whenever a print is required user punches in his ID number into the hardware device, and hence an underlying application gets the event and it calls a managed DLL, which inturn calls the Reporting services webservice on the same server. Problem starts after some days (typically after 2 -3 days), when the server response becomes slow and the aspnet_wp.exe restarts every now and then and after this sequence of happening, finally it crashes with some event in application in event log which reads: The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty. Also many times the applications log file reads : There is an error in XML document (1, 948). I think this error starts when the aspnet_wp.exe is restarting, but I am not sure. The server operating system is Windows 2000 SP-4, MS SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition SP-4, MS Reporting Services 2000 Standard SP-2 with .Net Framework v1.1 The Server is running many applications apart from the ones listed above and there is a moderate usage of TCP/IP sockets for communicating with certain hardware devices. NULL means unknown across the board- for an INT, a CHAR, a DATETIME etc. If you want to put in your own bespoke logic to cater for unknown values then i guess that is something you can do but in my opinion its added complexity.     - ReportServer DB and ReportServerTempDB databases You need CleanupCycleMinutes in rsReportServer.config -- The default is 10 minutes. <don't get me wrong here...> It doesn't really sound like you know whether large orphaned snapshots are a perf problem in your scenario...by definition, they shouldn't be, as they are just blobs sitting around doing nothing. Even if you clean up more often, there's no win (unless you are storing snapshots to the filesystem with limited space) as I don't think the databases themselves are going to shrink for you anyway...You could actually make a situation which you think is bad worse by modifying this setting, as there's a cost to running the cleanup process. You don't want it firing all the time, and when most people modify it, the actually bump the value UP to make sure they don't get contention between the "normal" SSRS processes that read/write to these tables and the "cleanup" process. </don't get me wrong here...> Hope this helps Tag: adding client server aliases

    - Problem with WHERE on ROW_NUMBER when using nested query You will be surprised to know that the cost (compilation) is so negligent that it does not even show up in the estimate - take a look at the execution plans for these. The cost is exactly 50/50. Sqlserver is pretty smart to _correctly_ flatten out the queries to produce the best plans (most of the times). How can I import a client alias list in SQL Server 2005 Configuration Manager The tool provides a way to export a list, but not to import a list. Adding 100 SQL Server instances via the GUI is time consuming and agonizing.
