O/s: Windows Server 2003 SP1

This error typically results from installing over a network. Can you try to copy the package locally and run from there to see if that works

Thanks,
Sam Lester (MSFT)

I am getting the same error. The first time I got this error I was installing it via the network so I've copied SP2 directly on the server and I still get the same error results.

(There's a error windows that says "The following unexpected error occurred: Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file")

try stopping and restarting the sql service and applying the sp2 locally rather then over the network.

I also encountered this error while installing SP2 to a named instance of SQL 2005 SP1 (x86). The error occured at the "Setup Support Files" step. I was installing locally and have tried a couple of times with restarts in between.

Any ideas

Can someone please post a solution for this problem..

Re: Unable to install SQl Server 2005 SP2 - Unexpected error

We should take this a step at a time.

Can you check for the existence of the cached SQL support MSI located here:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Cache\SQLSupport\x86\1033\SqlSupport.msi

I am thinking that you have either run out of disk space for the cached MSI to be saved correctly, or you do not have full permissions to this MSI.

Re: Unable to install SQl Server 2005 SP2 - Unexpected error

MikeL.

Thanks Dave.

The path C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Cache\SQLSupport\x86\1033 is empty once the failure happens, however there was a SqlSupport.msi file there briefly prior to failure.

I've got 4GB of free space on the drive and am a member of the administrators group.

Re: Unable to install SQl Server 2005 SP2 - Unexpected error

Dave Young - MSFT

Apparently this is a known problem that several other customers have hit. Basically your cached copy (cached by Windows Installer) of an MSP is missing from your drive, and so Windows Installer is trying to locate it again from the original install location, which is a temp path which no longer exists.

Specifically, the MSI log refers to the following:

C:\WINDOWS\Installer\1553df86.msp

I am trying to find a workaround that will restore this file so that you can proceed. Without this file, MSI wil continue to complain.

We are still investigating this issue. Are you running on a single instance of multi-instance machine

Thanks,

My current SQL Server Standard product version is "9.00.2153.00"

May be it helps in your investigation

Thanks

Re: Unable to install SQl Server 2005 SP2 - Unexpected error

That may help. Can you provide us the summary.txt file that SQL SP2 creates It should be located in %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix.

Thanks,

Peter
