    - Sql Server Express - Shared Hosting - Connection String - What do you guys do? Hey, I have a asp.net 2.0 app that has a sql server express backend. I have been scratching my head for weeks trying to find a good wasy to encrypt my connection string. I store the string in web.config (which in itself is in theory "safe" because it's not servable) and I have scoured the web to try to find a simple way to encrypt the connection string. Even using user store would require running aspreg_iis.exe on the host with a command prompt (which clearly I cannot do). It seems that everyone's solution requires running a command prompt executable on the server. So I am left to wonder what everyone else does. I am not comfortable using just the web.config because a determined hacker could get to that info. Then again, a determined hacker could get into any system , I guess. There are no credit card #'s stored in this app, but in theory there must be a way. I run all access to the db through stored procedures with permissions, for whatever it's worth. Thanks in advance!     - Stored Proc. With Multiple Database Reads I am trying to write stored procedures that deny table-level read/write to the sproc_user login. Here is what I want to do: Make a sproc_user login and allow public access to a database called KM. Within KM database, write stored procedures that query and update tables that may exist on either of three databases: KM, QM, or REP. However, I can get the stored procedure to read/write to tables on KM database, where sproc exists, as long as I grant execute rights to the login.     - Display Analysis Services Server-Based Formatting in RS 2005 Report Thanks Teo, Actually I'm still having problems with displaying color. Here are some more details of the issues...thanks in advance for any help you can provide: I am trying to display a grid with dimensions on both the rows and columns and server-defined formatting on the cells within. In AS 2005, you are not allowed to have a dimension on the columns if you use the "Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services" data extension, and if you use the OLE DB connection, then you are allowed to have a dimension on the columns, but the cell properties (FORE_COLOR and BACK_COLOR) do not get translated to AS attributes. One work-around is to translate the column dimension members onto measures, and then display those measures in the grid...however, in my specific implementation, that causes the report to run really really slowly (minutes) and is just not a feasible solution. Basically, I need a data extension that allows a dimension on the columns AND translates the AS properties to RS attributes...does one exist (either through MS or a third party) I need to dynamically generate an MDX query based on user input. For instance, if the user inputs "United States" (via an RS report parameter...I like this feature a lot by the way), then I want to query my relational SQL database and find a list of comparison countries (comps) and then generate an MDX query which will show me a grid of AS-based data for each comp. I have not come up with a way to do this at all. In another reporting platform we demo'ed, they provided a programatic hook for developers to manipulate the XML report definition before it was sent to the rendering engine and at that point you could insert a custom MDX query based on the user input, but I have not found any way to manipulate the dataset queries in RS. The MDX query parameter implementation does not seem helpful in this case. I have heard of something called "query expressions" which sounds promissing, but I can't actually find any examples of this or even a basic explaination of how to use this feature (if it exists).     - Connection Error: (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe. Not sure if you have resolved this or not. I had the same error trying to connect to a new SQL Server 2005 installation with the management studio from a remote machine and discovered that the named pipes protocol was diasabled in the SQL Server network configuration protocols.     - Calling a package at Runtime I am working on a package that will sense a text file in a folder. From this text file I will be extracting the file name which will tell me what task I need to run. How can I create a package that, depending upon what the file name is, call a specific package. To be more clear, I will have 3 different flat files that is each in a standard form. Their names will be unique. To transform their data will require different ETL logic.     - Accuracy of Host column on SS 2000 Enterprise Manager Current Activity Process Info Screen Yesterday and today, the Process Info screen in Enterprise Manager indicates that the "Host", a single workstation on our network, is generating around 50 connections to the database. This particular application is well-behaved and typically generates only 2 to 5 connections per instance. Furthermore, we cannot find this particular workstation/host on our network because we retired it off the network some time ago. Anyone know of the accuracy of the Hosts column on this Enterprise Manager screen We're suspecting that the network address column is correct but the Hosts column is incorrect. I know that a couple of extra methods came with the Security extension 2005, that you have to override in your own code, but you'll notice soon enough.     - Get Culture for Multilanguage in Reporting Service Well that sounds all too familiar, ��#error��, this is often caused by insufficient access to the assembly��s resources or inaccurate data sent to the localization service (an empty string). In the web application that we are currently developing we created our own reporting service that calls the SRS server and sends all the parameters and attributes to the server as serialized data. Process allows us to gather our application A��s parameters and send it to the SRS server who then calls Application B. Application B finds the requested resource and returns it. You could look into taking a similar approach by adding a parameter from you application A��s currentUI Thread and might achieve the same results. From the code you posted I can only notice one possible flaw; This code is called from the report server who does not have direct access to application A. remember your calling the report server and not this function, hence the security overrides required to make the service calls work. LocalizedString( string stringIdentifier, string language) If you enter the parameter manually, then it can call the service, however in this case I could see it being null, because it��s a three way call and your attempting to remove the middle man. You request the report from A, the SRS processes your request and then calls the assembly B. Right now it would appear that there is no communication at all between your server/report and your applications. Without fully understanding the exact code of your application I can only assume it might be due to one of those issues. I suggest trying the parameter expression method I stated the last post.     - Deleting data bloats log file Thanks for the info. I set the Recovery Model to simple. I deleted about 95% of the data. I ran DBCC SHRINKFILE and shrunk the log file to 2 mb (FANTASTIC! - NO PROBLEMS) But the file size for the DB still show 702 mb in Windows Explorer. So I looked at the Disk Usage where it shows 702 mb for SPACE RESERVED but only 4.3 mb for SPACE USED. I wonder if this is because the field with the most data is ntext datatype (which I believe reserves a certain amount of disk space regardless of what is used. The db was created several years ago in Access and migrated to SQL Server 2000. I have considered changing the datatype to nvarchar (MAX) which I believe only reserves what is actually needed. Also, when I create a full-text index, I get an alert that the ntext datatype may prevent some features of WITH CHANGE_TRACKING AUTO; Do you think the ntext datatype is keeping the file size so large If so, is it simply a matter of changing datatype on that column Or could there be other factors keeping the db file size so large Tag: Reporting Services 2000 Installation Problems.

Hello every1.

I have been trying to install Reporting Services 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 machine with SQL Server 2000 and Framework 2.x for a couple of days now.

When i run Reporting Services setup it tells me that Asp.Net is not installed or is not running, i know this could be caused becouse i have Asp.Net 2.x running instead of 1.x, but what ever i do, changing all IIS settings and website settings so the server uses Asp.Net 1.x the problem still exists, is there any solution besides a reinstallition and installing RS2000 be4 the Framework 2.0
