    - Oracle connection fail with Microsoft OLEDB provider for Oracle MSDAORA.1 Hi, I do not use BLOBs nor 64 bits. I have a 32 Bits DELL Precision worksation that I use as test server with Windows 2003 Enterprise SP1 all patches and the RTM release of SQL 2005 dev. For Oracle Client, I use the 9.i version. I use Oracle only to read data from using select statements, I do not use linked servers. All other Oracle providers works on that machine but the Microsoft one. All databases were restored from the dev backup Before rebuilding this machine, this provider was working. After disk format and OS install, I did rebuild the machine in this order: 1) Oracle Client 2) SQL 2005 3) VS Studio 2005 4) Restore of DB's 5) Restore of sys variables and xml configurations as well as surface config 6) Restore of logins and access settings 7) VSS 2005 RTM, I take the SSIS package from there, I know it works on the other server.     - Web Services And SSIS I am having trouble executing the example from microsoft that call a DTS package from a web server. I alway get Service Failed. I have loggin on in the pagage and it doen't get that far. I have set up IUSR_<machine> with access to sql server and granted approiated file permissions. The package loads but fails on execution.     - Package taking 100% of the CPU when it is opened for editing in visual studio Hello Bob, Thanks for your interest. No change between two runs and I have not installed/Uninstalled any thing. All other packages are working fine but only that package is taking lot of time. Today I able to open the package and even able to select the components(Transformations) but It takes lot of time to respond.Around 5 minutes it takes if I switch from one dataflow to another.     - Restore sql server 2000 backup on sql server 2008 You can upgrade a SQL Server 2000 database directly to SQL Server 2008. This is fully supported. Not all of the upgrade setup code is in yet, so there are limitations on what upgrade scenarios are supported at this point. (Actually, I don't believe any instance upgrade is supported as of the July CTP.) If you can give me a pointer to the BOL section you read, I'll make sure it is correct, or get it corrected. The takeaway from your blog regarding NEBs is that the multiplication operator (as in the * operator used for math, not for crossjoin) uses the NEB. I wanted to use the same version, get ahead in class and learn more than what the class will be covering.     - Trigger in the Subscription database - Transactional Replication... Hi Peng, The answers to ur questions are below : Yes. We replicate the three triggers to the subscribers. Three-part name is used in the first trigger alone (DBName.dbo.Sample). In the second trigger the table is updated by giving the table name only. According to my understanding, I dont think the trigger is capable to directly modify the tables at the publisher. One more additional input is we use Queued failover as Update Mode.     - Dimension Hierarchy does not allow duplicates Hi, Yes, that is the way I have it setup. StoreID is on top. Then Make with a relationship to StoreID. Then Model with a relationship to Make and StoreID. That is the correct way to do this isn't it I get a list of makes under storeid's and models under makes but any given make or model only appears once in the hierarchy.     - Unable to merge two stand-alone recordsets I have two stand-alone recordsets. They have the exactly the same fields definitions. They come from different ADODB connections (Microsoft Jet). And I cannot merge them into one recordset. I was trying to merge the second recordset into the first, but instead of adding the records, the first recordset becomes populated with infinite copies of the first record of the second recordset.     - Can you reference a Package using ActiveX Script Task? The reason for this question is SSIS through its ActiveX Script Task does support Office Automation. However this task does things in what appears to be an arbitrary fashion. While it allows CreateObject() function to create some of (I have tested only two) of office applications and the ADO it does not seem to generate a DTSpackage using the same syntax. More than the 'best practices' suggestions I am interested in why and why not questions. I do agree that the ActiveX Script Task support is so poor, I do not know why in the first place it was included. The interface is bad, no intellisense support, and error codes are hard to fathom.     - Distributed ETL server I work in the data warehouse team of my organization. We are currently rearchitecting our server environment. One of the ideas on the table is to devote a separate server for ETL processing. The databases would reside on several other servers. The ETL server would run the SSIS packages. I'm questioning if this would be a good idea. The database servers would continue to carry the load of the query processing for the ETL. But with the ETL process on a separate server, the resultsets would need to go over the network for the SSIS package to then work on them. Plus, they would then have to go back over the wire to the destination server. Are there advantages to this setup Does this setup have better scalability Or, would it be better to run the ETL from either the source or destination database server Thanks for your consideration.     - MSSQL ODBC difference compared to MySQL Hi Martin, After running your repro and experimenting with sqlcmd, I can see the same thing happening in sqlcmd with two separate processes running your statements in transactions. If I set the transaction isolation level to 'snapshot', the problem does not surface and each thread sees only the rows that existed before their transaction started or were inserted during the transaction, so perhaps snapshot isolation is for you. For reference, I ran sqlcmd twice and executed: SETUP: ------------ create table t2 (id integer identity primary key, thing integer) WINDOW 1: ------------------- begin tran go insert into t2(thing) values(10) insert into t2(thing) values(14) insert into t2(thing) values(15) go select * from t2 go WINDOW 2: ------------------ begin tran go insert into t2(thing) values(100) insert into t2(thing) values(110) insert into t2(thing) values(120) go select * from t2 go However, setting the transaction isolation level to 'serializable' seems as though it should also address your issue; but it does not. From looking at the locks that get held, it is clear that thread 1 and thread 2 each obtain an exclusive lock on a subset of the rows in the table, then try to obtain a shared lock on the whole table to select. Since each holds an exclusive lock on a subset of the table, they reach deadlock. Effectively, the isolation level needs to be set such that they do not see each other's rows during the transaction so they can read without locking the table -- or what they see as the table. Snapshot isolation level clearly does this for you, but one would expect serializable to do it as well.
