    - Microsoft search service kills SQL 2000 server Hi all, This may be more of a Sharepoint or server question but I thought I would post it here to start off with. I have an installation of SQL 2000 SP4 and sharepoint services 2003 all on one server. For example the SQL 2000 (SP4), sharepoint and its indexes all on the one server (HP G4 DL380). I have installed the index service and the full text services on the SQL server then configured searching in sharepoint. The search worked fine for about a year until one day the server started randomly hanging for no apparent reason. After a hard reboot the server would begin to hand again after around 2-3 minutes of being online, sometimes less. After lots of problem shooting I nailed it down to being the Microsoft search service that caused the issue. Basically if I set this service to manual and boot I have no problem. As soon as I start the service the server will start to hang about 2-3 minutes later. I tried this again last night after trying some fixed and got the same result. The only error I get are in the application log which are about 4 of these with different file types. One or more documents stored in image columns with extension “X” did not get full-text indexed because loading the filter failed with error '0x1' The server continues to log messages while it is hanging and you can ping the server but you can not access sharepoint, remote in to the server, you can login locally but as soon as you try anything like bring up the start menu all resources will freeze up. During this time there is no disk activity and the CPU usage is 1-3% and mem usage is low. Can anyone suggest anything to fix this problem so I can start the Microsoft search service and use search in sharepoint again.     - Precedence Constraints and Sequence Containers I have about 12 sequence containers mapped out to execute separately based on a precedence contraint and an expression. These lie at the same level and order in my sequence. Only one of these will execute based on an expression. After any of these executes, I have a consecutive sequence container that I'm attempting to execute. I've set the precedence contraint from all twelve of the prior sequence containers to this single sequence container that I would like to run after any of the 12. My problem is that the package will only allow one of these twelve sequence containers to become a precedence of this second single sequence container at a time. The package will let me graphically attach the precedence constraint from all 12 to this single sequence container, but when the package runs, it fails to follow through to this single sequence container.     - Top N Sum and Sum for Others My data source is an AS-cube and I have a dataset like: Category Value A 10 B 10 C 10 D 10 E 10 F 5 When I create a table with a details group on "Category" with the following filter "Sum(Value), Top N,=5" then I see the expected categories : A until E. But the sum in the table footer shows 55 in stead of the expected 50. I know that you can define a filter directly at the table level, but then I'm unable to filter a Top N on categories.     - Identity column value increments by 2 rather than 1 on insert I have an issue with a stored procedure activation on a service broker queue. The activation stored procedure simply RECEIVES the top message and then INSERTs a row into a table with an identity INT column. Each row inserted has the identity column value incremented by 2 rather than 1. Only one row is inserted in the table. If the activation is set to OFF and then manually calling the original stored procedure the insert works fine and the identity column value is only incremented by one. I initially tried the SQL Server Data Access forum but I now think my question is more security related. Is it possible for a web user who has been successfully authenticated with forms authentication to be authorised to use a SQL Server 2000 role depending on a particular ASP.NET 2.0 role that they have been authorised to use I understand that that I can assign a SQL Server 2000 role to the ASPNET or NETWORK SERVICE account but this will grant access to anonymous web users to the database role. I can ensure that I only call stored procedures which access sensitive data in web pages that are in restricted by ASP.NET roles. However, it would be nice to also restrict stored procedures via the ASP.NET 2.0 Forms Authentication roles. If this is not possible have you got any bright ideas how I could restrict access to stored procedures who are anonymous web users.     - distribution cleanup cannot clean up snapshot folder We are using SQL Server 2005 SP2 to do transactional replication. We and have a separate service account for the SQL Agents (sqladmin) vs. SQL Replication Agents (sql rep admin). It is my understanding this is a replication security best practice. The sql rep admin has full permissions on the snapshot share folder and it's subdirectories. The sqladmin account does not have permissions at all. I have been getting an error message when we run the distribution clean up job. Executed as user: PROD\ sqladmin . Could not remove directory '\\Tes01box\Repldata\unc\qabox01_DB01_TO_ORACLE\20070905104896\'. Check the security context of xp_cmdshell I have dropped the publication and recreated which is what appears to have caused the error. From http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms151151.aspx Note: If a publication is dropped, replication attempts to remove the snapshot folder under the security context of the SQL Server service account . If this account does not have sufficient privileges, log in with an account that does have sufficient privileges and remove the folder manually. Removing a folder requires the Modify privilege if the folder is a local path or the Full Control privilege if the folder is a network path. The note above implies that the SQL Server service account (sqladmin) needs permissions on the snapshot folder as well.     - suser_sid returns value for nonexistent login I have also had this issue pop up two times, on different customer machines. I have not yet been able to reproduce this in my environment. The issue has been when we've backed up a database and restored it onto a different SQL Server machine. Our code tests: IF SUSER_SID(@ls_login_name) IS NULL to determine whether or not it should create a new login. Then is tries to synchronize the user. SUSER_SID(@ls_login_name) returns a non-null value, but the login name does not exist in syslogins or sys.server_principals. I try sp_droplogin or DROP LOGIN and they both fail because the login name does not exist. I think both instances happened with SQL 2005 SP2, but I'm not sure. I plan on changing my code that synchronizes Users to use ALTER USER ... WITH LOGIN = xxx to simplify everything, but it is still dependant upon IF SUSER_SID(@ls_login_name) IS NULL. I need a small confirmation regarding storing the Chinese and Japanese characters in sql server. Can we store Chinese and Japanese characters on a same database with Chinese Collation Or else we need to store it separately with respective collations.

I tried to store both characters on db with Chinese collation it works but I am not so sure if it is right way to do so. Please confirm on this as we are doing research stage to build website in Chinese and japanese.

The Chinese and Japanese alphabets are more than 2000 characters so you need to find the version of Chinese and Japanese and use the correct code page and collations for each language with NVarchar or NVarchar(max). Hope this helps.
