    - Crash in Imapi2 after erasing disk I have an app that uses IMAPI2 in a "minimal" fashion. I obtain access to an optical drive through IMAPI2, and do most work by sending MMC commands through : IDiscRecorder2Ex->SendCommandGetDataFromDevice, etc. There is a rare crash that occurs, maybe once in 30 times or less. This crash seems to be inside of IMAPI. The crash occurs during my code to erase a disk. This code basically uses IDiscFormat2Erase::EraseMedia to do the actual erasing, which is then followed closely by MMC StartStopUnit commands to eject and then reload the medium. The drive door opens, and the disk ejects, suggesting that the StartStopUnit to unload the disk has executed. The second StartStopUnit to reload the disk does not execute, suggesting that this call, or something immediately before it, is the one causing the crash. I should also mention that after ejecting the disk, I release the IMAPI objects. (After the disk is ejected, I release all of my access to the optical drive.) I recreate all IMAPI objects anew in preparation for the command to load the disk. It could also be these commands which are causing the crash. No errors of any kind are returned by any IMAPI call.     - Edit Control Ok, This is my first time posting. Every time i get a problem, i just reread the msdn over and i figure it out. I am trying to learn the Win32 API. I tried to make an edit control. I create it and it shows up... i can put text in with WM_SETTEXT. In the gui it is just a window with the edit cotrol in it. i can select it move the cursor with the arrow and if i press delete (not back space) it deletes the text (selected or after the cursor).     - SqlDatabaseActivity can't handle output parameters when calling a stored procedure Dear all, I have just run into a problem with SqlDatabaseActivity which I downloaded from Microsoft. It doesn't understand output parameters in stored procedures, so it never returns any values for them. It assumes that all parameters are input only. I had previously discovered that it didn't handle @RETURN_VALUE, but fixed it myself. The failure to handle output parameters looks more fundamental, so I am reluctant to embark on trying to fix it.     - Determine desktop size Not sure if this is the right place to post this. Also its my first post so please be gentle!! I want to determine the size of the available desktop on a windows Vista machine taking the Taskbar and Windows Sidebar into account. Now I can call SystemParametersInfo using SPI_GETWORKAREA and this returns the desktop minus the Taskbar but doesn't take the Sidebar into account. I have also used FindWindow to get the handle of the "SideBar_AppBarWindow" class and then work out its size. But no handle is returned.     - IDirectDrawClipper::GetClipList() ignores the area covered by the start button My app works very slow under Vista. It works ok on XP. The Start button and sidebar keep repainting all the time. 1) Why does the IDirectDrawClipper::GetClipList() ignores the area covered by the start button It gives me a single clipping rectangle instead of giving me 10-20 rectangles to tile the circular edge of the start button. On the other hand, if I open a small window on top of my application (like task manager) GetClipList() correctly returns a region with 12 rectangles, because of the curved edges of window border. It seems that the start button is drawn by a simple "overlaid paint" after the window manager finished tiled-painting all the windows. 2) Why does IDirectDrawSurface::Lock() turns-off the start button and Windows Sidebar, repainting them after UnLock() Tag: Desktop Background Disappears!

    - How to CreateProcess NOT as administrator One of our modules is an executable that will always be run as administrator (after getting permission from user). One of its screens allows the user to run a different executable, which the code currently does by CreateProcess. The problem is that since the first process is running as admin, CreateProcess has the second process run as admin also. This is undesirable because it is a security breach (the second process can open browse dialogs that should not have admin privileges in this scenario). How do I get the second to run without admin privileges I do NOT want attach a manifest to the second exe that says it does not want admin privileges because under certain circumstances (not from the first exe), it SHOULD be run with admin privileges.     - Installed ORCAS now all activities have red cross through them Sorry if this is a totally dim question!! I have ORCAS and 2005 installed. The WF designer in 2005 has changed after the ORCAS install. I don't know whether it should have but it has. Now all my activities have red X through them when you reopen a workflow.     - Help with ORCA when using a bootstrapper We recently modified our InstallShield Installation program to use a bootstrapper/chainer. We meet all the requirements for Test Case 11. When we execture the setup.exe msiexec.exe is running in task manager and it uses Windows Installer to complete the installation. My question is now that I'm using a setup.exe where the msi is embedded into it, how I can validate any of the test cases that use ORCA At least 1/3 of the test cases use ORCA and it appears that it can only validate MSI's. Has anyone run into this How can I validate these test cases now that I'm using a bootstrapper How will ORCA tests be validated when I submit our application for cerification testing Thanks in advance! During experimenting, I found the strange behaviour though. I will describe a sample and how to reproduce a problem. - Lets create workflow, which consists of the only code activity, and code activity handler makes the only operation: Thread.Sleep(5000), i.e. sleeping for 5 seconds. - Then let's create workflow which calls above created workflow, using sample from the reference. - Create a host and add there persistence service and local service from the sample above. Run workflow. It runs, calls the callee and finishes. So far so good. Run workflow and immediately shutdown the host (or stop runtime). Runtime will be stopped after 5 seconds delay, which is fine. Both workflows will be passivated at this moment. So far so good. When host is started again, workflows are loaded, the callee finalizes, but the caller waits indefinitely . I found that the reason is that there is no report that callee completed and as a result, item is not enqueued and caller is not closed, staying in memory forever.     - Microphone issues Hi all, I just installed windows vista ultimate 64 bit edition, and I cannot get my microphone to work. I am using a creative headset (HS 600), and I can hear sound from the headphones and from my regular speakers, but the microphone refuses to work. I have a creative x-fi, and the latest creative drivers installed. I tried configuring the microphone from the control panel also but windows is unable to detect any sound. I have used the same settings in the creative control panel as I did in XP. The headset is attached to the ports on the soundcard itself not on the 5.25 bay expansion. The microphone worked flawlessly under XP, and I am sure the cables are plugged in correctly as I did not change any hardware. Thanks for any help!     - Loop back audio capture at fixed sample rate Hi, I am writing an application to capture audio using loopback mechanism provided by WASAPI i.e is capture whatever is being played on the system. But I want to capture it at a fixed sampling rate i.e 22KHz. What I get from the documentation is that this is not possible and by using vista core audio API's we can only capture at the sample rate at which the audio is being played. I've a ParallelActivity containing two ListenActivity, base on the result of ListenActivity, I want to close the workflow instance in some conditions. I call RegisterForStatusChange() of each ListenActivity for ClosedEvent, and in OnEvent() of my workflow, I call context.CloseActivity() to close the workflow. However, it throw an exception that I cannot close it because of there are active child activities, since ListenActivity in another branch is waiting for user input or timeout, its state is executing.     - WWF Design? I've been reading up on WCF and WF the past couple of days on articles I've run across on Google, blogs, etc. and at this point my head is just swimming in all the new concepts, designs, etc. Looking for some feedback and/or suggestions for design/development for a future system, so I can focus directly on what is needed vs. all the possible ways you can use the WF system. The current system we have is made up of a few dozen Window Services, spread across about 5 different Servers. Each system works off an Inbox/Outbox Folder structure, which could be local or remote Servers or FTP Sites. Each system may Insert or Read data from SQL Servers, each system may have it's own set of "working" folders where it may need to process/parse data from files that go through the system. I have run some tutorials on working with WCF Services, and was able to get them to work fine using IIS to host it. I used a simple Windows Application for the Host to interact with the WCF Service. I was thinking of maybe using this in a distributed load balanced scenario, but not sure how to hook it into the rest of the system for load balancing. Items I'm looking at are: 1. Build a system where each Window Service we have now could work (once redesigned/redeveloped under WWF) in a distributed load balanced environment, across the 5 different Servers we have. 2. Each new WWF System runs independent of each other, so if the Hosting App stops then it doesn't stop all the Systems but only the one. 3. If a file being processed fails, for whatever reason, need a way to make sure on the next cycle or revolution of the processing engine that the file gets processed again. At some point during the day, Databases may be backed up or engineers may be working on the Network and something spikes causing paths not to be found. This doesn't mean the file is bad, it just needs to be processed again. In the event we determine the file is bad, need the ability to remove it from the processing Queue in the event we deem it a failed packet. 4. Need a way to archive files coming in, as well as those going out. 5. Customized Tracking ability of files processed. Counts for files processed, bad packets, emails sent, etc. 6. If the Servers are restarted (occasional patches require this), need the Systems to automatically fire up when the Servers start back up. I'm just looking for some feedback, maybe linked articles if available, that talk about what components to develop or what parts of the WWF I should be focused on for developing a system like this.     - Problems with Ownership, Timers etc I have standard problem with ownerships, simply saying Runtime isn`t unlocking it and i have no idea why All my workflows have fields ownerId and ownedUntil - table InstanceState - set to some values(differnet from null). But ownedUntil expired long time ago so why isn`t it clearing Looking through tables and logs i noticed strange things : field nextTimer in table InstanceState is set to - 9999-12-31 23:59:59 for exery workflow why does workflow works in UTC Time i see this in database scripts - could it be a problem cause my servers aren`t so there is differnce in time. If it is a problem how can i change it, i know how to change in database scripts but how to change time for workflow It is not always like that but at some strange circumstances all workflow start to get locked and i have to unlock them manual, when my furious clients calls me. Recently my desktop wallpaper started disappearing. It comes on briefly at the end of boot up, then goes black. It will return at the moment I click on "Personalize" then "Desktop Background" -- just clicking brings it back, without choosing a picture. Then, after hibernating or sleeping, I lose it again. Having to keep manually restoring it is a pain, otherwise I have a blank screen. I do not use the sidebar feature, but it doesn't matter.

I've been having the same problem in XP. The background goes blank after I quit from a full screen app. It started doing this a month ago, I dunno maybe because of the new nvidia drivers
