Thought I'd post this as doing a search for the error code on microsoft does not retrieve any hits!

Got vista on a new Acer laptop and aside from the usual problems with it I'm now finding windows update continually fails to install a security update (KB93602).

When trying the install manually I get a message saying preparing to install... then creating a restore point... Then installing update (green bar goes approximately 50% across the screen, then the update fails with the error code.

Anyway any sensible suggestions on how to fix this appreciated. So far I see Vista as a *massive* step backwards from XP!

Richard

Found a hack of a way to fix this (by searching other forums).

Delete all the files/folders under \WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download and reboot. After that select windows update and re-do the install. Worked first time for me. Why that works and what was causing the failure I'll leave for microsoft to work out!

Thanks Richard

Your Post was VERY useful. I had similar problems today and like you I could find very little elsewhere.

I have been working with 3 newish vista (home premium) machines which form part of a larger network of about 10 pcs and mobiles running a mixture of windows ancient and modern with a windows 2000 server floating about ineffectually in the background. (I just arrived OK!). Anyway, last night the 3 Vista machines received their automatic update offerings from microsoft and today my access database which runs across the 3 machines on a p2p basis started chewing up data with some sort of lock conflict.

This was extremely annoying as I had only last week managed to stop access from crashing every time more than one machine tried to read data from the backend (This was another Vista Bug which seemed to have been fixed with Hotfix KB935366).

On investigation it seems that two of the Vista machines (all with much the same spec and track history) had downloaded the updates fine while the third had downloaded all four updates, installed 3 and failed to install 938979

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979

I tried to get this to install several times with no luck until I spotted your workaround.

I have to say I am a little less happy about deleting files from the bowels of operating system folders so I moved the contents of the directory to the machines desktop. NO GOOD! Update found it there. So I copied the files to a memory stick and then deleted. This forced windows update to re-download the files from microsoft and the newly downloaded file installed just fine.

I can only assume that the original download file was corrupt in some way and that getting hold of a good copy was all that was required.

Anyway, thanks again for posting, I would have lost a lot of hair today without your workaround.

Phil

I did what was suggested at the top of this thread, and the error message changed codes (80246007), but same result. downloaded Installer Cleanup (one of the suggestions), looked at the installers I had a choice to clean up, and dismissed that as a solution (my error with Windows Mail Security Update). However....

When I tried loading Installer cleanup, I was disallowed, and suggested by Windows to try loading that program as administrator, which through a couple of goofy screens later, I was granted this priveledge, and the program loaded flawlessly. However that did not help.

Windows Live Help search engine popped up with the idea of stopping and starting the BITS service (Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services/Background Intelligent Transfer Service). That worked.

I have a sneaking supicion what REALLY worked is that the Installer clean up program install upgraded me to administrator, and that was what allowed the update to load. It may have been a combination of all three (administrator rights, clear download folder, restart service), but at this point, I only care that it is working.

I also have an Acer and have the same error message (interestingly enough, no green lines across my screen).

I deleted the files as recommended above and now have gotten an error 80246007 upon attempted re-install of the update. I am going to search for a solution of the error 80246007 now. But just wanted to let you know that I did not get the problem resolved, just got a new error message instead.

P.S.

Just to give you an update on my error 80246007. After I posted my reply above, I found this article on Microsoft's site:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-XM/Help/ad8a25e8-90a5-4c50-a89c-0f6cd07ab6e01033.mspx. It definitely worked. My update has finally installed.

In a nutshell, the article recommended I do the restart of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (same thing was recommended by MiguelOne user above). Just doing this has resolved my error 80246007.

So, to summarize: 1) Once I got the error 800736CC I did the folder clean-up as was recommended by Richard in the first post and re-ran Windows Update at which point my install failed again and my error message switched to 80246007.

2) Once I got this new error message, I restarted BITS as I explained 2 paragraphs above and my problems were solved.

Thanks everybody for your input.

P.P.S. I really hope engineers at Microsoft would take a look at this and perhaps release some sort of a patch so that less tech-savvy people would not have to resolve this issue manually like we did.

Thanks again, everybody,

Val

We had the same problem with my wife's new HP Laptop, using windows basic home Vista. So I contacted HP Support. They suggested four steps, and since the SoftwareDistribution folder is not deleted, it seemed to me to be a reasonably secure way of proceeding:-
A. Disable Windows update service.
(I could not follow their exact instructions - possibly related to a different version of Vista, so I used the following menu options):-
From the start button menu select Windows Update.
Select Change Settings
Select Never Check for Updates.

B. Rename SoftwareDistribution folder
Using Windows Explorer (or double clicking on Computer)
Right click on the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and select Rename
Rename the folder SoftwareDistribution.old
You will get a message similar to "Destination Folder Access Denied".
Ignore this and click on Continue
(
Windows should automatically recreate a SoftwareDistribution folder when C:\ Windows is closed and then reopened. If not create a new folder in C:\Windows and rename it SoftwareDistribution. This folder will be empty).

C: Restart Windows Update Service.
As with A above, change the settings in Windows Update to automatically check for the updates.

D Restart the PC and perform Windows Update Again.
