after copying about 16'383 files you must re-boot Vista, because Vista Explorer begins making nonsense.

Try it that way:

make a new directory somewhere on your harddisk

open Notepad and immediatley save in your new directory (the Notpad .txt file can be empty or not)

select that saved Notepad .txt file with Vista Explorer

do exactly the following 16 times - it will take longer and loger any time of course (up to minutes in the last cycle):

ctrl-a    ctrl-c    ctrl-v   (Select all files in the directory, copy them, paste them)

===

I'm shure you will get a message " ... out of memory ... " - and you have to reboot for a stable system.

And your new directory will have less then 16'384 files.

Out of Memory When you look in Task Manager (or similar tools) you will see that there are no memory problems at all !

It's just the buggy Vista Explorer doing Bullshit and reporting Nonsense !

Hello HReg

and even if you do it in smaller pieces you would have to re-boot each time after about 16'384 files !!!

when reaching this hard-limit of 16'384 files copied by Vista Explorer, people has dangerous troubles with Vista (loss of data without warning etc. !!!) - and has to re-boot immediatly.

16'384 can be reached after minutes, houres, days, months - it's just a ticking bomb all the time !!!

16'384 is a limit over ALL copy operations that we do with Vista Explorer since the last system boot - it's NOT a limit for each disk or so, and it's NOT a limit for one SINGLE copy-task !!!

Congratulations Microsoft !

PLEASE REPLY HERE WHEN YOU EXPERIANCE THE SAME KIND OF PROBLEM - SO MICROSOFT COULD WAKE UP !!!

ChronoReverse

I'll have to counter C&P with C&P

*snip*
No it doesn't. You do know how if you copy and paste like the way you prescribed, Explorer has to check and rename each and every file you're copying right That takes a lot of text parsing.

Anyways, to refute you, I modified your test slightly such that Explorer doesn't need to rename the files as much (only a few folder names).

I take your 16,384 and raise you 32,768.

Another successful copy.

There IS another bug in here though. See if you can spot it.

Re: General Windows Vista Development Issues Alert ! Vista Explorer only supports 16'383 File Copy Operations !!!

HReg

So why does my copy to a second disk, which requires no file renaming, fail

After the copy terminated with the 'out of memory' message, I tried to copy the remaining files.

This immediately gave a further 'out of memory' message, only resolved by re-booting the system.

Hello HReg

Sorry for the delay.

As soon as Kaspersky is un-installed (not just disabled !) the error does NOT occur any more.

As soon as Kaspersky is re-installed the error does occurs again - and is anytime reproducable.

As soon as Kaspersky is un-installed (not just disabled !) again the error does NOT occur any more.

As soon as Kaspersky is re-installed again the error does occurs again - and is anytime reproducable.

etc. etc. etc.

I have confirmativ feedbacks from many different people / installations:

- confirmativ that the error occurs ONLY on installations WITH Kaspersky

- confirmativ, because ALL those made the test to reproduce the error, but did NOT had the error, did NOT install Kaspersky

I have informed Kaspersky Germany, Mr. Michaelis, 12 hours before i gave my conclusions here and in other forums. I did not yet got an answer from Kaspersky.

Re: General Windows Vista Development Issues Alert ! Vista Explorer only supports 16'383 File Copy Operations !!!

HReg

Interested in your comments about needing to un-install Kaspersky.

I have a new computer with Vista Ultimate installed, and a 320 gb disk.

Tried to download 900 mb of jpeg files from DVD last night.

It never finished!

There were about 300 files in total. No matter how many times i tried, with Kaspersky disabled, it never suceeded, jsut got slower and slower and finally stopped!
