I have a ton of computers that are about to be upgraded to Vista. The problem is I have a few server apps that REQUIRE IE6. They've been tested on IE7 and failed. Can you run IE6 on Vista I need to be able to run IE6 on the boxes stable until a fix is developed for my apps that will allow them to operate in IE7. Thanks for any feedback!! :)

Also while I'm at this, how do you see hidden files in Vista I'm sure it's something simple I just haven't bothered to mess with it.

Hello Josh Robertson,

Internet Explorer 6 will not run under Vista, if you are testing your web application to run under IE 6 you can use the recently released Windows XP + IE6 Virtual PC image that Microsoft has released which can be downloaded from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx familyid=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1-73d0a413c8ef&displaylang=en. To view hidden files in Vista, open up the folder options dialog by selecting Folder and Search Options from the Organize drop down list in any explorer window. Select the View tab and select the Show hidden files and folders from the Advanced settings view. Also I would suggest posting your question in the TechNet Vista forums located here http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/default.aspx ForumGroupID=204&SiteID=17 as the MSDN forums are geared more towards developers.

Thanks!

Matthew Braun

Netlife

Keep in mind that the Hard Disk image expires on 08/17/2007 so it may not be suitable longer term.

Will Microsoft release another hard disk image of XP closer to this expiry date

I believe that they will, they have already done this once before (it's only timebombed to prevent people using it as a permanent OS)

I'm sure you were trying to be helpful, but this reply is not a solution to the problem.

More importantly, it highlights a serious issue.

His situation is that he has a web based application which has been tested, and DOES NOT WORK with IE7 on Vista. This means that the users of the app have IE6. If the "recommended" solution is to run a virtual machine of XP and IE6, how the heck can the users do this You are going to have a secretary run a virtual session Seriously

There are two solutions: 1. fix the app(s) to work with Vista/IE7. This is a good choice, but he may not be able to do that (technically, legally, budget, etc). 2. Dump Vista for XP. After using Vista for almost a year, I personally would recommend option #2...Vista just isn't right, and probably never will be (I base this conclusion on the fact that Service Pack 1 of Vista doesn't appear to be positioning to solve anything of use for normal users or developers).

Unfortunately, Microsoft has lost their way. I, like many IT pros and .NET developers I know, want to love Vista, but it has way to many problems. Best to jump ship.
