Hi,

Does anyone know if the user downloadable winhelp engine be available for the Vista Launch date

It is posted on MSDN that winhelp is being deprecated.

This is talked about here http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp url=/library/en-us/dnlong/html/AppComp.asp

In the compatibility risks section.

I have seen it recommended that ISVs move to html based help.

The article also mentions that you will need to download winhlp32.exe to view .hlp files in vista.

"Windows Help is being deprecated for Windows Vista. To view 32-bit Help files with the .HLP file name extension in Windows Vista, you will need to download and install WinHlp32.exe from the Microsoft Download Center. This download is not available for Beta 2 or RC1."

Will this download be made available

Can we distribute winhlp32.exe in our installs

Hi Tony,

All the work I did about two months ago trying to track down info on winhlp pretty much hit a dead end. The responses I recieved is that release dates were not available for this product. I wish I had a better answer for you.

As for redistributing the file, that would be included in the user agreement when you obtain the file.

I know it will be a lot of work initially, but I would recommend making the transition to html based help. Winhlp is being shutdown so chances are you will have problems with it.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607 -- this says there will be a download, which:
1) will be available in time for the consumer release of Vista (today )
2) will not be redistributable
Someone at MS told me to watch that URL, which will be updated, they said, to point to the download or include info about it. So far, no joy.

Actually, KB917607 now does not say that the download will be available for the consumer release. The KB has been updated to say that it will be available in early 2007. Define 'early'... We also assumed it would be available for RTM but still cannot find the download. We are holding up a product release for just this reason. Had we known during our certification testing on the Vista beta that winhlp32.exe would not be available for RTM we could have scheduled in a rework of the .hlp files and our use of Winhelp().

The "The Windows Vista Developer Story" series also references the missing download in the "Application Compatibility Cookbook" article:

"To view 32-bit Help files with the .HLP file name extension in Windows Vista, you will need to download and install Windows Help from the Microsoft Download Center."

The question for the Microsoft Development team is: when can we expect the download
