I am having the same problem with my Windows Live Messenger. I just bought a new Acer Aspire 9410 laptop and tried to run Messenger only to get the data execution prevention error. Please let me know how to fix this issue. I cannot believe that Microsoft would have an error with one of their key programs like this.

Thanks,

Dave

Hmmm.... I have an Acer desktop (surely a coincidence) and same problem.

Some people have success by uninstall and then get latest Adobe Flash player (v9) installed first and re-install Messenger.

Can't see how that would help myself.

You can always use the client via the Internet http://webmessenger.msn.com/

Failing that try installing Messenger 7.5 - so it is not the latest version but at least it seems to be more stable than version 8.1!

Nothing on MS Knowledgebase yet but I can't believe MS have shot themselves in the foot this badly i.e. can't run the latest version of Messenger on the latest operating system by same vendor!

Good luck,

DRM.

Hi DRMJunior and everyone,
I found a fix to the problem with Windows Live Messenger and Windows Vista giving you the Data Execution Prevention error. I found it in a post on a forum: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1212984&SiteID=1 and there was a link to a .rar file to download that makes the appropriate changes in the registry:

http://www.thevista.ru/datas/users/50764-help.rar . You'll have to restart after you make the changes to see if Messenger will work. It did for me. Good luck!

Dave

I too experienced the same problem, if you have an ACER laptop and only an ACER laptop, run this patch and you should be ok, must be administrator.

I just bought an HP Pavilion PC, it came with Vista Prem, I have never encountered this error before in my old XP, and I am a newbie so please be kind and no too technical, I am just learning .
My IE will not open at all, when I try it says it is closed and I will be "notified" (lol) when a fix is found, it says DEP closed it down. So, why is that Is there something already bad on here I did every scan available and nothing came up. I went into the DEP on here and set it to only be used on major programs, then restarted the PC, still it will not open IE. What is this, is it only a Vista thing and what can I Do Sometimes I am glad I also have Firefox installed or I would be lost.
Thanks, LB

It's me again, I found the fix I thought I would share in case anyone runs into this issue. For love not money could I get IE back up, nothing would shut DEP down, until this. I don't remember where I copied it from, but it worked like a charm, good luck!

Disable DEP / NoExecute Protection to fix Random Windows Explorer crashes

Due to the way Windows Vista's boot editor has been created, it is now harder to disable DEP / No Execute Protection. However, after some amount of research, it would seem that some of the random Windows Explorer crashes that users are experiencing is caused by this technology. You will need to disable it and reboot, which should cure some of the crashes:

1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".

2. If asked for permission to run Windows Command Processor, click on Allow.

3. At the command prompt, type in "bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff" (without the quotes).

4. You should receive a message saying "Operation Completed Successfully".

5. Restart the computer, DEP / No Execute should now be disabled.

And it was!

I have a new acer 5610 running Vista and had the same problem and the trick worked for me also. When reading the Acer site (see below), the conflict with Acer eDataSecurity Management is well explained.

Hi, I had the same issues, did you read my posts here, by LorettaBlonde

Before I did what I wrote next I had gone and and shut down DEP, but that didn't work at all, In the second one I wrote what I had to do to get it to finally stop, it worked for that and for letting me back into using IE.

Give it a try, it may help you.
