I recently bought a sony VAIO laptop. It was working fine and it came with vista pre installed. However, there was a CD that said 'Upgrade your Windows Vista Experience'. So I installed the software and once (after some hours) it was installed I saw the speaker icon at the bottom right with an X on it. Placed pointer over it and it said 'No Audio Output Device is Installed'. I have tried many things that people have posted here but nothing. I dont know what to do. This is not the only problem I have had with Vista, I was told that that Vista does not read USB ports, is this true Also I have been having wireless problems. I contacted my ISP (AOL) and they said Vista is not compatible with wireless, is this true As you can tell im not an expert in computers, but I seem to always be faced with computer problems. Please Please can someone help me with my matters. Thank you

Vista fully supports USB audio.

You should contact Sony about both of your problems, the AOL person is incorrect - Vista does support wireless networks (it would be a major issue for my laptop ).

Thank you so much for replying, im very grateful. I contacted sony earlier to day and told them of all the problems. In regards to the sound: i was told to go into device manager and click on the sound, video etc... and deleted the 2 drivers, one was the sound and the 2nd was i think the media (TV), then they told me to re start and press F2, this took me to the BIOS set up were I clicked F9 and re stored the settings then F10, once i done that i was told to go to the vaio web site and download drivers, one o which was the BIOS but i didnt see any sound drivers, then i restarted. When it restarted the icon at the bottom right of the speaker had no X, the sound was working. I was happy and with the other issues they said microsoft will be sending updates later. So, I thought id watch some TV, but it said there was no tv tuner but i could buy one, even though i watched tv 3 days ago on this laptop. I called sony and the women there was quite confused. She told me to restore my computer to a earlier date which was yesterday just after i upgraded vista, once this was done i again had no sound, she went through so many check, do this, click that, restart, push F2, push F10 etc but nothing. At the end she said in these rare cases they ask people to do a full factory re set, i said i cant because i have many files on thee that would be lost (I have a dictarphone and the software is SONY, so when i connect it to the computer it saves everything on the computer, athough it has a file name it gives you the choice to put the name etc... i go to universty so i put the lecturers name and subject). I mean i can save all the files on my external hard drive but i will not have the notes, i hope im making sence. The lady said she will try to find a solution that does not involve me loosing all my work, (have not heard from them today!!!!).

I asked what was the CD that was given with the laptop about even though vista was pre installed. She said the CD was to upgrade from Home Premium to ultimate. She then asked when was upgrading if i was asked for my credit card details which i was not, this really did confuse. She said if the upgrade was successfull (which it was) it should be vista ultimate.

Im not sure now what to do but I may re store every. Am I the only one with problem

I have been having similar problems with a Vaio BX396XP running XP Pro, loosing audio and wireless drivers. I have spoken to Sony and they don't seem to have any idea as to why or what to do. To the point where Windows is no longer able to managing my wireless conections and I am having to use an Intel ap which I have to reinitialise after hibernation. The Audio issue is the same as stikyikky and I have pretty much given up on that as the wireless issue is driving me to distraction. Does anyone have any sugestions

You're not alone. I just upgraded my new Dell laptop to Vista Premium and I am getting the same "no audio output device is installed" even though the device manager says the device is working properly. Lovely. I guess I'll do a system restore for now. I hope that works anyway.

Well just wanted to let you know others are having the same problem. If I find a solution, I'll post it here.

silksoul4u: Did your Dell Laptop come with Vista pre-installed I'm assuming not, but it's worth a check.

What model Laptop is it If the laptop was a "vista ready" laptop, and the audio solution on the laptop is an hdaudio solution, the odds are very good that you need a system ROM update before the audio will correctly function.

Alternatively, you should try the Windows XP drivers that came with your laptop - they should work just fine on Vista.

Yes it came with Vista Home Basic, and I upgraded to Vista Home Premium.

Also its an Inspiron 1501.

FYI........ I just ran the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor(which I guess I should have done beforehand). It mentioned that my audio (SigmaTel High Defition Audio Codec) might not work with Vista. Guess they were right. I visited SigmaTel's website but no help there.

Can someone tell me if I just do a system restore if it fix this problem

I've been researching the web on this til my fingers are worn out. lol I was able to fix my problem!!!!!!

Okay here's my situation:

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1501. It came with Windows Vista Basic, and the sound worked fine. I did the upgrade to Vista Home Premium, and the sound quit working. My computer was telling me that "no audio output device was installed". When I would check my sound card, it told me it was working. My sound card by the way is a SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.

Then........I found this link on another site..

http://www.support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R147075&SystemID=DIM_PNT_9200C_XPS_210&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=8907&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=195629
.

I downloaded the new driver and restarted the computer and the sound now works!!!! I didnt even have to reconfigure my sound driver!! Whew!

I hope this helps others out there..

Lisa

Well, I have a GATEWAY 7320GZ RAN THE VISTA ADVISORY FIX ALL THE PROBS AND THEN INSTALLED VISTA. NOW I HAVE NO SOUND AND NO dvd/cd+- rw COMBO DRIVE.

CHECKED EVERYTHING IN DEVICE MGER SAYS EVERYTHING IS WORKING. SHOWS SOUND AS WORKING AND DVD. THE DVD, PUT BLANK DVD OR CD IN THE DRIVE AND SAYS NO MEDIA PRESENT. BTW TRIED DIFFERENT BLANKS.

THE SOUND MAKES A NOISE ONLY WHEN BOOTED UP, LIKE IT'S BEING CHECKED TO START, A CRACKEL, THATS IT, NOTHING ELSE. NO X ON THE ICON AND NOT ON MUTE

Re: Vista Pro-Audio Application Development NO SOUND!!!!!!

I have trouble with disappearing windows sound drivers also, using XP as Timh1212. I spoke with a friend of mine and she said me this is a Microsoft Windows Media 11 related issue. But I can't find it in microsoft knowledge base (I found tons of Vista-related issues instead).

I have a Pentium D system with a Realtek HD sound chipset mounted in a Gigabyte 8I945P-G-RH motherboard. I hear system sounds, and can configure (and hear) the 3D audio using the card's application but directX says "No sound driver is installed" and the sound control panel confirms it.

Re-Installing sound drivers makes the computer work for a reboot or two, then driver disappears again.

P.S. My sister has an Ipaq PDA and her sound driver is disappearing also. She suspects about Windows Media Player, also.
