I am a consumer, not a programmer.    On 1/29/2007 I went to Microsoft Update and got two items from the software(optional) pane, they were as listed below.  After I got the updates the computer did not ask me to reboot as it had advised me I might have to before the update.  So after the successful download and install of these items and waiting a good while after the Microsoft Update website said success and I had closed it, I rebooted the computer using the start menu restart.  After the restart the computer would not access the internet whatsoever, even though my ISP said I had a valid IP number and my IP phone from Comcast was working fine.  I called McAfee because their software was not able to run and they looked through my list of add/remove programs and c drive folders and had no ideas so they sent me to Microsoft where I received a free case number for tech support which I am scheduled to receive a call back this weekend.  In the meantime, the install of Microsoft NET framework 3.0 failed on my computer.  The net framework 3.0 would not uninstall, the computer would not shut off using the start menu shutdown or restart buttons, the computer would not access the internet or e-mail, and it wouldn't even start Firefox.  Internet Explorer 7.0 would run, however all it said was IP numbers and not domain names.  I couldn't get to Windows Update again.  I have a Mirus Innovations PC Compatible with Windows XP Home edition.  I ended up using the Phoenix CMe Console Restore Pro which is a 2004 software that came with my computer and has a partition of the hard drive where it backs up for me every day.  So I got my computer functionality back without the updates below.  I tried updating again yesterday but the same results occurred.  I need to know how to fix my computer myself without having to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch.  Would it be safe for me to uninstall Microsoft net framework 1 and 2 and all of the updates that went with them, uninstall mcafee which I get for free with Comcast security   Would it possibly work then   I need some advice please.  I don't know what the cause of these errors are, but I'd like Microsoft to make the updates work.  Thanks.

Like you I am not programer. Our set-ups are very close. My system runs an Athlon 64 3200+ and I have a little more disk space and you have 1 more gig of memory. I have the same issue with the exception that the Net Framework install didn't complete. I cannot uninstall the broken McAfee or access the internet. Running the diagnostic (I can't remember how I found it or get back to it) told me that The connection was there but it couldn't make contact with HTTP or HTTPS. Outlook (2000) also freezes as soon as it opens and populates.

I restarted in safe mode and could get internet access.

Because the Net Framework install didn't complete it is not in Add/Remove Programs So I can't do an easy uninstall.

Unfortunately I don't have a back-up to re-set from.

I am hoping that I don't have to do a total system rebuild. My daughter is in Ireland and e-mail/IM/Skype was our primary form of communication.

I only have one word, HELP!

Even after successfully installing net framework 3.0 it would not uninstall on my computer. I could not use Windows System Restore either because the computer wouldn't shut down through windows properly. Another thing that is troublesome is that these are my first posts with the new Windows Live login and it didn't notify me by e-mail when a reply was submitted to this thread even though I set it up to notify me.

I was able to correct my problem last night.

First, I ran McAfee's removal tool downloaded from their web site (unfortunately I just found out that I left the thumb drive with the URL at home today - sorry), then I ran the net framework 3.0 removal tool from the MS site (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx familyid=AAE7FC63-D405-4E13-909F-E85AA9E66146&displaylang=en), Since I didn't complete the install it didn't find anything to remove. Next I installed the Hive repair tool from MS site (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyID=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en&Hash=N8YSlXU7jeI%2fS31HsQEzwCL6NJAG3ktEe%2fRn2nxuosI527NxTCimRwlDkyp1mB1uxycz39Ds48U5HBWo%2fS6hjw%3d%3d). I also removed the Catalyst Control Center, and Hydravision from ATI using the "Add or Remove Programs" from the XP Control Panel. (I read that this causes a hang with net framework.)

I restarted and everything closed without hanging. Once up and running I had internet access and use of Outlook. I then reinstalled McAfee from Comcast.

I now only have net framework 2.0 installed and won't change that. After reading all the 3.0 documentation it appears that the only change in 3.0 is files to run Vista. I have no plans to add Vista to this machine.

I restarted a number of times without any problems. I think the hang at shutdown was caused by recently upgrading the ATI drivers. The broken McAfee was casued by the net framework upgrade.

I also purchased an external hard drive to start backing things up!

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Is there a chance that you are having problems with the installation of Root Certificates Update that came out about the same time as the .NET 3.0 McAfee has a solution to this on their website. They have 3 possible solutions that you can try. Go to support at McAfee's website and type in Root Certificates Update. I have had the same problem but have not been able to try the recommended solution yet.

It sounds like your connection is fine but that there is somthing that is impeding the communication between your system and the connection. Somthing that you might want to try is the following command from a dos prompt.

netsh winsock reset catalog

Fair warning though. This will totally reset your winsock stack to a "default" configuration. Any programs that insert things into this ( Such as Norton, I beleive ) will need to be reinstalled so this should be a type of "Last resort" option.

Good luck with getting your connection back!

OKay I went to the McAfee website and searched for Root Certificates Update and got no results.  If you have answers, please post them here so I can see them.

Oh I got my connection back as evidenced by my ability to post here.  I was able to run Phoenix CME Console Restore Pro and restore my computer to it's last recovery backup made by Phoenix CME Console which is a 2004 program that uses a separate partition of the hard drive to keep a backup of the system every day.  I was completely unable to even run McAfee so I don't believe I want to mess around with DOS prompt commands that will disable it further.  The program wouldn't even uninstall after the updates.  I have a conference call with Microsoft Tech Support regarding this issue scheduled for tomorrow morning.

I have a question, how do I backup all of my outlook express for WinXP contacts and messages   I have a feeling I need to go back to a windows restore point of 1/29/2007 in the afternoon before I tried installing the updates in the first place.  When it is over with, I want my e-mails back.  So how do I do it please

I just followed the instructions to uninstall NET Framework 3.0 and downloaded the redistributable net framework 3.0 from the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Release Notes webpage at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb188202(d=printer).aspx with success.  Before rebooting I went to windows update and got  MSXML 6.0 RTM Security Update (KB927977) and noticed that the Rootkits Update for IE 7 is no longer there for me to download.  OK well here goes, I rebooted and all is well.  The computer is working normally and I don't have to check McAfee's website or use the dos prompt.  Thanks for all of your help here folks.
