Cholmondeley

All right, I am the first to admit I am in over my head by even attempting this environment, but here I am any way. I was attracted by the idea of not having to know anything about HTML or scripts, etc. I am able to make projects, but I can't view any projects, not even my own (unless I choose to edit them). When I attempt to click anyone's link to their project (including my own), I get this: "Oops...

We're sorry, but an unknown error has occurred."

This puts a crimp in my learning curve. What am I missing Have I missed something besides Popfly Explorer and Silverlight to download

Thanks,

Nope all you need is Silverlight, you also need to be signed in but if you can see a list of peoples projects you almost certainly are. Could you post your user name, browser, OS and the URL of a page that doesn't work for you and we'll look into it.

Thanks

Re: Viewing projects

Cholmondeley

Thanks Andy. My user name: Linda OS: Windows XP.
I have used both Firefox 2.0.0.4 and Internet Explorer 6.0 and both give me the above error message. I did have one mash-up come up for me, but that's the only one I've found so far that will come up, even if it doesn't quite work properly.

URL that has error message: http://www.popfly.ms/users/Watcher/Earthquake%20Map

URL that allowed me to see mash-up, but reported errors in script reading: http://www.popfly.ms/shell.aspx projectType=mashup&initialBlockOwner=James&initialBlockName=Asteroids

I hope this helps you pin this down for me. Thanks again.

Re: Viewing projects

Cholmondeley

Well, I have been experimenting and I have found that I could only edit my web page project (by clicking the edit button after reaching it through "My Projects") if I was in Internet Explorer 6, although I did get a pop-up notice that I wasn't using Internet Explorer 7.0 so my experience might vary. When I tried to edit it in Firefox 2.0.0.4, it froze Firefox. After doing some editing, I decided to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.0. The result is both browsers freeze when I try to edit my web page. I am able to edit my mash-ups without difficulty. What is happening I do have a rather slow internet connection at my present location, could that be part of the problem If so, then why did it work with Internet Explorer 6 And in all cases, why can't I view anyone's projects (including my own) and get that error message in any browser

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Re: Viewing projects

AndyS

Thanks for the extra info, it does seem to be an unusual problem and we haven't had much luck reproducing it consistently, hopefully the connection speed shouldn't make to much of a difference. Out of curosity what is the connection and specs for the PC As we can emulate it here and see if that improves the odds of the problem occuring.

Re: Viewing projects

Cholmondeley

I am using a brand new laptop. It is a MPC, Intel Core 2 CPU, T5500, 1.66 GHz, with 1 GHz of ram. I am currently using a wireless connection at 54.0 Mbps. It says my signal strength is excellent. Is there more information that you need Thanks for trying to figure this out for me.

Re: Viewing projects

AndyS

Just one more piece, what's the internet connection your using Is it broadband or dial up

Thanks!

Re: Viewing projects

Cholmondeley

Star Band satellite connection. And a bit more info for you. I tried to view projects on a second laptop and a desktop--both PCs and both through the satellite connection. I received the error message on each of them as well.

Re: Viewing projects

Cholmondeley

Today I can edit my web pages and mash-ups in Internet Explorer 7.0. I can also edit in Firefox a new web page I created with next to nothing in it. I noticed another change. Firefox still freezes when I want to edit my first web page. It gets the tools showing, but freezes when it tries to upload that web page. I tried it again after making the simple web page. And this time it also loaded my first web page. I still get that same error message when trying to view anyone's projects--except the one referenced above. I wonder if there is a time-out set on your end that times me out before my slow satellite connection can load what I am trying to see. Maybe I can see that one mash-up because it is composed of only one block, so it loads quickly If you think this is possible, can you adjust the time-out function at your end or is it something I can do on my end Thanks.

I may not have a lot of knowledge, but I am persistent!

Re: Viewing projects

AndyS

Thanks for the update, sorry for taking so long to reply. I had a brief look into the time out issue and at the moment are pages are set to time out after 60 seconds of execution on the server but that shouldn't take into consideration the network transit time. I'm going to ask our test team to look into this on an emulated high latency connection. Will keep you updated and thanks for you bearing with us :-).

Re: Viewing projects

Cholmondeley

Thanks for working on this. I tried things again with the new changes to your Popfly site. I can now bring up my projects for editing without freezing my browser. The Whack-A-Mole Team Popfly game now works for me where it didn't before.

I still can't see most people's projects. I get the same Oops error message. It doesn't take but a few seconds for that message to come up, so I think it is less likely that this problem is related to slow internet connections. I did notice a difference in the URLs that work and those that don't. I don't know if it's significant.
Here is what I cannot or can see:

URLs I cannot access (Oops error message):

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

http://www.popfly.ms/users/Walkonthemoon/loopys

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

http://www.popfly.ms/users/James/FacebookAsteroids

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

http://www.popfly.ms/users/James/Classic%20Magic%208%20Ball

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

URLs I can access:

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

http://www.popfly.ms/shell.aspx projectType=mashup&initialBlockOwner=james&initialBlockName=Asteroids

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

http://www.popfly.ms/shell.aspx projectType=mashup&initialBlockOwner=james&initialBlockName=ScribbleCanvas

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

http://www.popfly.ms/shell.aspx projectType=mashup&initialBlockOwner=james&initialBlockName=SlidePuzzle

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

I tried to paste in screen shots of what I see when I can and can't access sites, but it didn't come through. Apparently I can't see things with a user in the URL. Why are some things saved one way and most saved another

I sure hope you can come up with something that helps. Thanks again for continuing to work on this.

Re: Viewing projects

AndyS

Thanks for the update and all the extra info Smile, sorry this still isn't working for you yet, we'll get there!

Re: Viewing projects

Cholmondeley

How is the research going on my problem I tried the new version of Silverlight, but that didn't solve it. Could it be something in the permissions since I can't seem to see anyone's projects if they are stored in their user file Must I be on someone's "friends" list to see their projects That doesn't seem right, but I'm trying to think why this is happening, or not happening in my case. The few I can see have a different URL. Why is that

Thanks for continuing to try to help.

Hi Cholmondeley, we are still looking into this issue and trying to reproduce it over here, thanks for your patience.

Hi Cholmondeley,

We haven't been able to exactly reproduce the issue you see.

Would you get in touch with me directly to see if we can get directly to the bottom of this My address is michleo[at]microsoft[dot]com.
