Dante_KZ

When I run msnmsgr.exe, either through the shortcut or the actual icon, the program does not load. Windlows Live Messenger, does not appear in the system tray by the clock, nor does the program open, however task manager reveals that msnmsgr.exe is indeed running.

I have reinstalled WLM - no effect
I have repaired WLM - no effect
I have upgraded to WLM 8.5 - no effect

Any help

Re: Having Problems with Windows Live Messenger

Dante_KZ

Well fixed it myself after waiting lol, but heres what I did.

Removed Windows Live Messenger from the computer.
If you are using XP like me Click "Start," click "Run," type "control appwiz.cpl", and then click "OK." In the list of currently installed programs, select "Windows Live Messenger," and then click "Remove."

That will remove WLM

This next step I found from several help files

Remove the temporary files and folders from the computer:

- For Microsoft Windows XP
a. Click Start, click Run, type cleanmgr, and then click OK.
b. If you are prompted, click C: in the Select the drive you want to clean up list, and then click OK.

Notes:

- If you partitioned the hard disk, the CleanMgr utility prompts you to select a drive.
- The Disk Cleanup utility displays how much disk space can be freed.
- This process can take several minutes.
c. On the Disk Cleanup tab, make sure that only the following options are selected:
- Downloaded Program Files
- Temporary Internet Files
- Temporary files
- Temporary Offline Files
- Offline Files
d. Click OK two times.

Notes:

- If you partitioned the hard disk, the CleanMgr utility prompts you to select a drive.

- The Disk Cleanup utility displays how much disk space can be freed.

Delete Messenger related cache files

- For Windows XP:
a. Click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then press ENTER to open a command window. Execute the following commands one at a time and hit Enter after each command to execute each of them.
b. The following commands delete files that are using when you sign in and the Contacts Cache folders.
del "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL"
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL"
del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts"
del "%USERPROFILE%\Contacts"
c. The following commands delete files related to sharing folders. Executing this command may result in deleting the files your contacts shared with you or that you shared with your contacts using the sharing Folders feature. Please create a backup of these files , if desired, before executing the next two commands.
del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<Users Live ID>\Sharing Folders"
del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<Users Live ID>\SharingMetaData"

If using Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then press ENTER to open the command window. If you are using Windows Vista, click Start, type CMD in the Search bar and then press ENTER to open the command window.
b. Type the following commands exactly as they appear below. Press ENTER after typing each command to execute the command.
Note: In some case you may encounter the error that the key does not exist. If you have typed the command correctly, this may be because the key has already been removed earlier or does not exists on your machine.

REG DELETE HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger /f
REG DELETE HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSNMessenger /f
REG DELETE HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live\ Communications Clients\Shared /f
REG DELETE HKCU\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL /f
REG DELETE HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\usnjsvc /f

The just re-install WLM

For those of you have had this problem...Dante_KZ has posted the fix.

I had problems with Live Messenger not loading but running in the processes. Upon shutdown, I would get problems closing WLM along with other issues such as CRTCClient or CRTCMediaController shutdown problems. I was also unable to work my Webcam Software (Logitech) and Messenger simulataneously.

After trying to debug the issue as being a potential conflict with my Video Card or Webcam Software/drivers, I finally came upon this post. After applying the recommendations everything is working fine again. No conflicts to report or strange behaviour as of yet.

Thanks!!

Re: Having Problems with Windows Live Messenger

RivenChronic

I seem to be having the same problem as that, but there are a few lines in CMD that arent working:
REG DELETE HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live\ Communications Clients\Shared /f
REG DELETE HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\usnjsvc /f
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL"

those are the things not working, I'm not sure if it would help if those commands work, but I tried it a few times and it didn't work without those commands. I'm not sure if those are the correct ways of typing them, but i tried them and they didn't work for me.

Re: Having Problems with Windows Live Messenger

Raggoz

Philliby use :

REG DELETE "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live\Communications Clients"\Shared /f

All registry keys worked except the "REG DELETE HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\usnjsvc /f" in my case, the system didní»t find it.

Ií»m using Windows Vista Business x32, and still after these excercises I caní»t run the WLM. Ií»ve also tried to disable the firewal but that didní»t help much.

Are you all using WinXP or Vista

So for my part, help is still needed for Vista.

I ran into exact same problem. And your solution worked!

"I had problems with Live Messenger not loading but running in the processes. Upon shutdown, I would get problems closing WLM along with other issues such as CRTCClient or CRTCMediaController shutdown problems."

I'm having the exact same problem, and I also had problems with some of the CMD lines, so going forward after doing everything that was listed, even though some lines didn't work, I reinstalled WLM and it still doesn't work.

yea i did everything recommended and i got WLM working but now my logitec camera is freezing msn and makes it stop responding.

Re: Having Problems with Windows Live Messenger

MattyS54

Yup thanks for the help guys. Got Windows Live up again after having this nasty problem. However now when I select 'configure audio and video devices' or try to send a voice clip in a chat window it crashes :/ seems like it could be related to the other issues that stopped in working before perhaps any ideas i could easily do a clean Windows install to sort this *** out but that seems a bit ott i'd rather just fix whatever it is...

Re: Having Problems with Windows Live Messenger

MattyS54

i actually have no sound in the application at all. seems like some kind of config settings need deleting before the application will right itself in much the same way when it didn't load at all.....weird.....

Re: Having Problems with Windows Live Messenger

Yee11

I also have the same problem!!!

I found out that the error is cause by my webcam software (maybe driver) which I just installed and configure for MSN.

Just press Ctrl+Alt+Del, end the msnmgr.exe (process tab), uninstall the webcam software and run again MSN Live messanger.

It's works for me.
