Michael Gannotti

I struggled with creating a mashup today using Virtual earth after having already done a few. When I went in to my existing ones that worked I discovered none are showing pushpins anymore. Looks like something is broke.

Thanks

My mashups with Virtual Earth work fine.

Try closing all browser windows and try again, that may help.

Michael, are you still seeing problems

When you drop the VE block on the mashup designer, do you get the background map on the designer itself (before you go into the Preview mode)

Re: VirtualEarth Mashups no longer working

Michael Gannotti

Yes I get the background map

Re: VirtualEarth Mashups no longer working

AndyS

Just to check the pushpins aren't appearing off the coast of west africa are they At 0,0 as that may be a symptom of a block failing to resolve a location to a long/lat or not parsing a feed correctly etc.

Re: VirtualEarth Mashups no longer working

Michael Gannotti

I switched from supplying latitude and longitude to supplying the name a comma then the whole address all in the title. This seems to work well (see http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/mikeg/silverlight1/PopflyMashups/FloridaFamilyTrip.aspx ) Only issue I now see is at one point a reader opened it and only saw the map, then yesterday the pushpins were there but only the title data was rendering through and now today everything appears to be rendering (pushpins, Title, description).

Michael Gannotti

This evening the map would appear but none of the data. Appears to randomly work and then not.

Hi Michael,

This sounds like an intermittent problem with the underlying data source (in this case sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/mikeg). I tried this with your URL above, and also through ripping and previewing the underlying mashup at:

http://www.popfly.ms/shell.aspx projectType=mashup#MichaelGannotti|FamilyFloridaTrip

Both ways look fine right now.

In order to get more detail on this I turned on the console (Show Console before Preview) and got the following output. If you could look at the console output when this is failing, perhaps we can hone in on exactly what is going wrong.

Re: VirtualEarth Mashups no longer working

cgoran

I'm finding this to be the case now with all mashups using genames :-(

Looks like the service is down

My Van Halen Tour Mashup was working just yesterday and today no worky

geonames: Error from lookupOnPlaceName: Unable to get data from 'http://ws.geonames.org/search q=San%20Francisco&maxRows=1&Style=Full&country=us' (error code 500). The site may not currently be operational, so please don't shoot the messenger!
Actually I can't get Geonames to work on static data either.

Geonames is working for me (including your URL ://ws.geonames.org/search q=San%20Francisco&maxRows=1&Style=Full&country=us). Perhaps it was a momentary outage. Would you try again and if it still isn't working share the URL to your mashup so we can have a look

Michael

GeoNames is returning 0 0 again for me too when I do lookup by place name.

Also I noticed that when I do a lookup by zip code, the COUNTY is displayed, not the CITY. (Drag a GeoNames block into the mashup designer, choose the lookup by zip code method, preview, and you'll see the county, state, zip, and lat/long... but no city name.

GeoNames | lookupOnPlaceName is working for me with the default input, "Qwest Field". What input were you using

You're right that GeoNames does not return City (if you connect it to another block you'll see a City field, but City is always blank). I'm not sure whether Geonames has the capability to return City. I think that some zip codes span multiple cities.

In your other thread you were working on a block that would use another service to return city. Any luck with that

Re: VirtualEarth Mashups no longer working

checkmark

Yes, I realize that the city is there when I connect it to another block, which is why I wondered why the "toString" didn't display it. Some cities have more than one zip code, but I don't believe that one zip code can belong to more than one city.

What's not working is when I enter an address (such as 175 Forest Street,Waltham, MA) and use the getLatitudeLongitude method. It used to (ie, yesterday) give me a latitude/longitude. Now I get 0,0 off the African coast!

Hmmm...

In the other thread, I was playing around with trying to write a block of my own to do a similar task- and since figured out what I was doing wrong. Since the functionality I was writing is already available on Popfly, I didn't bother to share it.

Thanks for asking.

Mark
