A WPF application installed on a demo machine is failing to play WMV files giving the error above. The same file can be played using Windows Media Player 10 (and also 11) on the same machine. The demo worked fine up until early last week, possibly indicating a virus or compatibility problem with a Windows Update (no other software was installed). I re-loaded Windows XP SP2, and all current recommended updates. The problem still occurs. I also loaded WMP 11 on the system and the problem still occurs. The only information I can find on the error is it relates to "E_DDRAW_GENERIC" Is anyone able to give any information on this error Thanks.

Environment: Windows XP SP2, Toshiba Laptop with an Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family graphics chipset. I loaded KB935448 to fix a dll rebasing issue with the audio drivers (Realtek High Definition Audio).

This is an error thrown by the Media Player, and you can find more information at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0094.mspx#E1F

Did WindowsUpdate install a new video driver You can try to roll back any drivers installed during the update.

Hope this works.

Thanks for your reply. I have re-installed the latest video hardware drivers from intel (the video hardware is on the motherboard), and updated direct x, but the problem still occurs. Note that I have a WPF test app with both a media element and the windows media player ActiveX control embedded in a window (the WMP ActiveX control is in a WindowsHost control). The WMP ActiveX control plays the file, where the MediaElement fails with the HRESULT error. I can run this app on another PC and both the MediaElement and WMP ActiveX control play the file. I don't have Direct 3D drivers loaded on the PC with the problem. Does the MediaElement require Direct3D drivers to run

Hi, sorry for the delay with getting back to you on this. I checked with the rest of the WPF Media team as well as the Media Player guys today, sounds like you already have everything needed to run the app. We don't see any reason why it would throw that error, especially since you mentioned that it works for both WMP and its ActiveX control. But the fact that it used to work on this machine, and now doesn't, makes us believe that it could be a driver related issue. Do you remember which video driver was installed when it worked If you still have access to it, can you give it a try just to check Also, does it repro with all videos files or just this one If possible, it'd would be very hepful if you could send us a copy of the the app and video, so we can further investigate it. My email is [eddieli at microsoft dot com]

Thanks!
