I've got Orcas beta 1 installed on Vista Business and I'm having trouble with projects.

If I try to create a new Silverlight project I get an error that says "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component."

It still creates the project file through, but if I try to load the project directly I get the following message: "Project 'appname' could not be opened because the Microsoft Vistual Basic Codename Orcas compiler could not be created. Unable to find the required file 'mscorlib.dll'."

It's not just Silverlight though, if I create a windows forms application it creates the project and opens it up ok, but when it goes to render the default Form1 designer surface, it shows an error page with the above mentioned HRESULT error.

I haven't tried them all, but some of the other project types display the same errors at various points. The only one that didn't seem to throw an error were the WPF application types.

Just to be safe I went through and cleaned up my .NET Framework installations and reinstalled it. I've just started to reinstall Orcas to see if that helps, but that is going to be a while.

Any idea what is going on

Well, I've got it narrowed down. It would appear that it is somehow the silverlight 1.1a projects that are causing problems, but only with a Visual Basic project. It works just fine in c#. If I create a Silverlight project in VB it will fail, and if I create a standard project after that it will fail too. If I don't involve silverlight, then everythin works just fine.

I'll move my question over to the silverlight forums, but if anybody has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Thanks

It sounds like you're not running VS Orcas as Administrator.

On Vista with UAC enabled - you need to run Visual Studio in an elevated context (as Admin). They haven't set the manifest to make it happen automatically.

You need to right click on the Application/Shortcut and select Run as Administrator.

You can also Right Click on the app and select properties, then select Advanced - and check the Run as Admin checkbox - it'll always run as Admin then.

Hope it helps,

David

Same issue here, but I'm on WXP running as Administrator. Anyone find the solution yet

David M. Kean - MSFT

You shouldn't need to run Orcas as an administrator - we've done a lot of work to improve the experience running with lower-user rights.

Can you file a bug over on Microsoft Connect

I was having the same issue and I solved it by installing the Silverlight 1.1 Alpha Runtimes. Everything seems to work for the Silverlight projects anyway.
