Please Help....anyone...

I have just successfully installed MS Visual Studio 2005 version 8.0.50727.42.

When I click FILE - NEW - PROJECT - click on any of the Smart Devices - click Device Application and click OK, I expect to begin a new Smart Device project. But instead, I receive the error ..."error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component".

I can successfully begin any other New Projects, just not any of the Smart Device projects.

Any ideas

Are you trying to create native C++ project or Managed C# or VB.NET project. If its later, please ensure you've .NET Compact Framework installed. You may want to repair the installtion of your VS 2005. Looks like some COM component was not registered properly.

Thank you for your reply.

I am trying to create VB.NET applications for Smart Devices.

I have installed .NET Compact Framework v1.0SP3 and also v2.0, but am still receiving the error.

Also, I did a repair of my VS 2005, but still receiving the error.

I can't think of anything else to try.

Please help

Do you have any previous versions e.g. VS 2003 or beta products installed

Do you see various project types e.g. Device Application, Class Library under Smart Device->Pocket PC 2003 and similarily other platforms and project types.

Re: Smart Devices General Can't Start New Smart Device Projects

dmyers

No, I do not have any previous versions or beta products installed.

Yes, I do see other various project types like...Pocket PC 2003, Smartphone 2003, and Windows CE 5.0.

Under Smartphone 2003, I have the following templates...Device Application(1.0), Class Library(1.0), Console Application(1.0), and Empty Project(1.0).

I am attempting to select Device Application(1.0) and clicking the OK button, when I receive the error message.

Re: Smart Devices General Can't Start New Smart Device Projects

mgaur_MSFT

Most likely your installation is somehow corrupt and reinstall should help. Technically repair should have helped.

I'm assuming that you're having the same problem when you try to create anyother smart device project types such as Console Application or Class Library for PPC 2003 or WM 5.0

Additionally please try "devenv /setup /resetuserdata" before trying reinstalling.

Manav

Re: Smart Devices General Can't Start New Smart Device Projects

dmyers

You are correct. I am receiving the same error when attempting to create any Smart Device project types.

Please provide more info on where I would find, ""devenv /setup /resetuserdata".

After I try that, I will try a complete uninstall and re-install.

Thank you,

Dan

Re: Smart Devices General Can't Start New Smart Device Projects

mgaur_MSFT

Launch VS from command prompt by typing the following:

devenv /Log c:\VSLog.xml

This will create a log file called VSLog.xml on your C: drive. Now try creating a new Smart Devices project. When it fails, it should get logged into the log file. This will point us to the COM component that is giving errors.

Probably the COM component is not registered and registering it using regsvr32.exe should help. You can also e-mail me the log file at mgaur at microsoft dot com

devenv.exe is located under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE

Hello Manav,

I have created a log file and emailed that to you.

Please review the log file and advise.

Thank you,

Dan

Closing this topic as I'm trading e-mails offline on this topic and helping Dan resolve this issue.

Re: Smart Devices General Can't Start New Smart Device Projects

Hello Manav

I'm encountering exactly the same problem as Dan descibed in this topic. I can't create any Mobile Device Projects, error: HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component. Got the same version of vs as dan.

Because I had Beta Versions installed which screwed up my installation of vs2005, I already had to install vs2005 about 3 times. Therefore, I'd be glad if there would be any solution without reinstalling vs again.

I already created the logfile as described in this topic (see below). That might be of some help.

Any answer would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Benjamin

Very strange. I was hoping to see some errors in the logfile. Do you have IE7 installed on your machine We have seen some script errors due to IE7. Try lowering security settings if using IE7.

No, I don't have IE7 in my machine. I already tried to reinstall the .net compact framwork but didn't help. Because I can't start Mobile Device Projects for .NET CF 1.0 either, I guess it's not a problem with the .NET CF. Or am I wrong

Is there any way to re-register the components vs needs in relation with mobile device projects I had to do something similiar as I was missing some web project templates (issue due to previously installed beta version).

Thanks for your help
Benjamin

Re: Smart Devices General Can't Start New Smart Device Projects

dmyers

Hi guys,

I have completely reformatted my hard drive, re-installed Windows XP, re-installed VS 2005 and the .NET Compact Framework, and I am still receiving the "error: HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component."

Additionally, I just installed VS 2005 and the .NET Compact Framework on a second computer now, and again I am receiving the "error: HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component."

Any thoughts !!!

Dan Myers

What happens when you Select Tools Options - Device Options. Can you see any devices listed there.

or from Tool Menu, Can you start Device Emulator Manager and launch say an Pocket PC Image

Repair of VS does not fix any corecon corrpuption issue. If either of the options given above fail, I could suggest something.

Also what media are you using to install VS (DVD or MSDN download).

Do you install an addon like the device command shell on this machine
