To convert from a CHAR* to a BSTR, you need to split the task down into two steps. You can find documentation for this function on MSDN at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/k1f9b8cy(VS.80).aspx To create a BSTR we can use the Win32 API called SysAllocString. A BSTR is basically the combination of a C style string (i.e. NULL terminated) and PASCAL style string (i.e. a length field before the string data). The BSTR poiner returned by SysAllocString is offset into this datastructure just after the length field, so the strings are still compatible with APIs which expect WCHAR * arguments. Typically if you call SysAllocString, you would also need to call SysFreeString ( http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms221481.aspx ) at some stage.     - How to use a c++/MFC ActiveX control in a sidebar gadget ? Hi, I am stuck. Please tell me how to use a MFC ActiveX control from inside a gadget, when I don't have the DLL of it ( since there's no template in VS to create a MFC activeX control DLL ) . How can I use it in my gadget then I went through the earlier examples and they were either concerned with VB or the DLL version of the ActiveX. I created a MFC ActiveX control ( using a standard VS template ) . The name of the project is " MyActiveX " and the name of the class ( to which I added a method to return a CString ) is " MyActiveXCtrl " CString CMyActiveXCtrl: tringprint(){ CString string1; string1=_T("Hello world"); return string1; } ( The above is the function that I added to the class ). I compiled the above program and there were no errors reported. ( This also means that VS registered the ocx files ) Now, I tried creating an object using var myControl=new ActiveXObject("MyActiveX.MyActiveXCtrl"); However, the above line gives the error " Automation server can't create object " , when I try to run the Html file in the sidebar or in the browser.     - MRU again I noticed that if an application is present inside "Programs" folder, after you execute it, it will displayed on top of the MRU list within Start Menu (for Pocket PC). But if the application is not inside "Programs" folder, after you execute it, it will not show up in the MRU list. Also, if the same application, which is inside "Programs" folder, is launched via one of those hardware buttons on the PPC, it will not show up in MRU list. My question is, was the above observation true If it is, the only way for an application to show up in MRU list is for user to launch the app from within "Programs" folder. This is a little bit odd.     - Cannot link to GAPI (GX.LIB) Hi Experts, I have been struggling to link my application with GAPI library. I am using Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK and trying to get access to the Video frame buffer. From the MSDN API list I found GAPI provides interface to access the video frame buffer for windows mobile 2002 and above platforms.     - Program Create is a newer verison of the .NET Compact Framework than then version on mobile device I created a program on visual studio for my pocket pc. I was using pocket pc 2003 console application made a cab file. Downloaded and installed it but when I tried to open the file it gave me an error message saying. Error: This application (SampleApp2.exe) requires a newer version of the Microsoft .Net Compact Framework than the version installed on this device. That function should create a new instance of the NDIS device and if the driver is not loaded, it will load it as well.     - Debugging into managed code from Javascript I've seen debugging weirdness when crossing a UAC boundary (for example, trying to attach to an instance of Visual C# Express in order to debug an XNA content pipeline, but failing when running Visual C# as admin like recommended). It's just a shot in the dark here, but if your debugging tools have elevated privileges they may not be able to see the sidebar process (different context/scope). I found that it was best to run Visual Studio as non-admin, even though it's recommended that you run it with admin privileges (don't know why -- everything I do works perfectly fine as non-admin).     - Low Memory Resource File error In a recent very graphical .NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP2 application I ended up having to do a lot of work. One issue I found was that loading resources out of a resource file I noticed a lot of FileNotFound exceptions in the CLR at runtime. Apparently this is due to the way the CLR searches for the resource files. So I decided to load image resources once off and then managed the resources myself. So take it for example I have class FooControl that has an image that is needs at runtime. If I put 10 of those controls on a form then I'll have to load the resource 10 times. A waste of memory and CPU if you ask me. So I just cached it on the class level - not ideal, but ok for my application. Code Snippet class FooControl { private static readonly Image _image = FooControlResources.Image; } That way the image is only loaded once and I can reference the single instance from any instance of FooControl and the image will only be loaded once per AppDomain. Say your app name is 'my app' You have to remove the following key from the device registry 'HKLM/Security/AppInstall/my app' If you try to re-install the cab after this, the warning will not come up. For example, I have a class ClassA supported for PocketPC but not supported for Smartphone and a ClassB supported for both platforms.
