Visual Studio 2005 IDE crashes with C# projects

I¡¯m having this problem with VS2005 it crashes when I keep break point and start debugging with C# applications (console project, Web Projects, Windows Projects) and also existing projects. Strange thing is it works fine with VB.Net projects.

It comes as Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered an internal error

Re-installing and then installing Service Pack 1 did not make a difference, i.e. VS2005 still crashes.

Event viewer has application error entries:

Faulting application devenv.exe, version 8.0.50727.42, stamp 4333e699, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug 0, fault address 0x000000012.

I¡¯m using Visual Studio 2005 Team edition for Software Developers

Windows XP Professional SP2

Please help me with this I can¡¯t debug my applications any working solution would be much appreciated.

Does the problem persist if we reboot into Safemode

This can isolate some third party application/driver¡¯s interference.

If we disable Add-ns (e.g. ¡°Tools¡± | ¡°Add-in Manager¡±) and run ¡°devenv.exe /safemode¡±, do we still have the problem This can eliminate the possibility that third party Add-ins are causing problems.

I tried in Safemode also still the problem exists

If we create a new user account, do we have the problem This can help to isolate user profile corruption related causes.

Hi,

DId you click on the "Send error report" button that was on the dialog that said "Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close"

If you did, then your event viewer will have an "Information" right where you saw the event that logged failure information for devenv.exe that you have posted. If you right click on the "Information" and select "Properties", you can see a bucket ID (a long number). It looks like the following. Can send that number to me

Fault bucket 355320355.

Thanks for this information! This is helpful. I will post what I find out based on the bucket ID I see in the event you have given.

One quick question - do you see this crash when you are evaluating some expression in the debugger windows (immediate window or watch window or any other debugger editable window) in debug mode in C# projects

This has been now fixed in the internal builds. So, this does not happen now on VS2008. Do contact the product support if you need the hot fix for this.

If you determine that it is the same bucket ID that Srini is seeing that is causing the crash for you, feel free to contact the PSS using the link I provided above and mention this forum post and I can pass on the internal bug ID to them
