Please help me with code for interfacing to a barcode scanner on a ASP.NET webpage using C#.

What are you trying to do

A barcode scanner is simply an input device as is a keyboard, or a magnetic stripe reader. A barcode scanner simply reads a barcode, then streams a series of input characters to the computer as input. You need to design your forms to accept data in such a way such that your fields are long enough to handle the length of the barcode(s) being read, and perhaps some code to automatically focus the cursor in an input field when a page is loaded, but other than that, it's just standard web page programming.

I want to develop a library system, so each book will have a unique barcode that will be stored in a database. I want to create an interface where a user lends a book and the barcode is used to facilitate that process. Note : I'm also just using Visual Web Express Edition. Another question is: Is it possible to design this interface with VW Express

Your system would have a page "check-out" or similar, and this would facilitate check-outs of multiple books for a given library patron. Once the Patron-Check-Out screen had loaded, you might have a page which has just a textbox where the cursor is placed by default. When the book barcode is scanned, it will enter the unique ID for the book in the field, and insert a carriage return (ENTER). You could set this page up to auto-post back, such that that book can be processed without having to click any further buttons, and if all is successful, the page loads again, with the cursor again in the textbox, and details of books already checked out displayed in the lower part of the page.

I don't see any reason why you can't use Visual Web (VW) Express for this, assuming the system is simple.

Firstly you need a scanning device.

Have you checked out the Symbol scanning API They are a bit flakey, but they can be brushed up.

I have recently wrote a Scanning Class with some Interfaces to tie it to Forms that act to barcode scans. If you want it, let me know.

Thanks

Tryst - how would you use the Scanning API in a web application I would have thought that that would be more appropriate for a Windows Forms application, as the 3rd party API probably wouldn't be a scalable component. Please correct me if I am misled. I actually own a barcode scanner, and apart from (using the scanner itself along with configuration barcodes to) program the speed at which it returns data to the computer after a scan, it's worked just as if one manually types in the value of a barcode (in this case, probably an ISBN) and pressed ENTER after the value...

Out of interest, what does the API do

Can we chat on MSN Meassanger, my email address is wendy.biyela@enerserv.co.za. I have a lot of questions to ask.

Thanks

r s而考老h旨r Sc 汛l而缶灰 - you have a point that I was also thing about. The Scanning Class that I have implemented is for Windows Forms (Well, a WinForms on a PocketPC to be complete) and so I don't really know how you will go about doing in through a web application.

Wendy, I will be on MSN tonight at some point if that is ok with you (I am based in the UK). I can't really go on in work, boss don't really like it :-s.

Thanks

Previous posts were 10 months ago but hope you can still help me ...

I have purchased a barcode scanner that has both PS/2 (keyboard wedge) and USB interface

- I understand that former can simply stream chars as if from keyboard

The USB interface is more attractive as my laptop only has USB and not PS/2 keyboard connector

- is recognised but the HID stuff looks a tough hill to climb

[just like earlier enquiry] intention is to write C# program to track books going in/out, so would read ISBN [lookup via Amazon maybe] and individual book barcodes [book/other items for loan/return]

can you please help with that scanning API and/or your code classes if they address this requirement

- what library/components [ideally managed but COM is OK] do I need to reference and how to call

thanks in advance

Dick

Can you share the scanning class information I am trying to do the same with a windows form application on a pocket PC
