I was wondering if anyone else is having this kind of problem. When working in VS 2005,

the menus will freeze or should I say stay open on the screen and won't let me click on them, or select any options. I can minimize the solution and it still stays there, after doing this several times, it will allow me to select an option. Any ideas or suggestions would be great, I also get the error VS can't shutdown because of a modal dialog is open, close it first.

Describe your setup. Which version of VS2005, any addins Have you installed the SP1 and if you are on VISTA a specific SP1 for that Install all that are applicable to you.

Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Otherwise what are the specifics of what you do that causes this Project type currently working on Are you editing something specific...sounds like there is a dialog open, such as do you want to save...that has been hidden for some reason.

What are you working on when this happens

I used to see the "can't shutdown because of a modal dialog" a lot when I was working with Reporting Services in Visual Studio 2005. My only option was to save often and kill VS with task manager when it happened.

Bear in mind, Reporting Services is basically an addon for Visual Studio.

I occasionally see the menu thing as well, but only since I installed ReSharper (another addon).
But that usually doesn't last very long.

But this has gotten better with SP1 for Visual Studio.Net.

I am running VS 2005 sp1 on a machine with xp, Report Server Project. When I right click reports... then select add existing or new, this is when it happens. and sometimes the Solution Explorer and Properties windows even though they aren't pinned they stay open, and when I load a(n) existing app, they will open as though i have pinned them, I will have to close them completly to get rid of them then open them again. I don't know if it's a bad install or just really buggy. Any suggestions

More than likely your installation is fine...Reporting Services is just buggy.

When I am working with Reporting Services I follow this general strategy.
1. Check my report to make sure everything works.
2. Make sure I have a backup of my report in a good state.
3. Make one change
4. Make sure the report still works as expected.
5. Save the Report.
6. Return to step 3.

I have found that Reporting Services causes a lot of problems for Visual Studio, try to make sure you are never at a point where you can't start over. You will have to kill Visual Studio from time to time -- and I have no idea why.
