Not that I'm aware of. Generally speaking the goal is to make it easier to reuse real estate while still leaving everything available. Having to click on something to make it appear would require more work on the part of the user.
There are some alternative approaches to help resolve your problem but I don't know that any of them are an improvement.

Have the tool window show up as a tabbed document rather than a tool window. Keeps it out of the way until you click on the tab. The downside is that it is not easily accessible anymore if you keep more than a few documents open at a time.

Use a macro to show/hide the window. Set up a keyboard shortcut to show and hide the window when needed. This actually takes longer to show the window. It also requires that you do a little more work to get the window to show up. Note that there is a command to show the window but none to hide it so a macro is your best option.

Do not use auto-hide. Instead just resize the window when you need it. Still requires more work though.
