    - Using SerialPort with USB and removing USB cable while port is open Hi, I am having the problems you have been talking about, but am also seeing problems with CPU usage and memory leaking. If I am running a task manager, and run my program below, when i remove the USB port at the MessageBox (don't hit the 'OK' button)the CPU usage goes to near 100% and stays there and memory usage is in a continual ramp up. Left it running until it hit 500MB at which my 512Mb machine was running quite poorly. When I close the message box, I get the error dialog similar to what you are seeing.     - Combination console/form application I have an existing console application that I want to extend with an optional GUI front end. I would like for this to all exist in a single executable rather than writing two separate versions (a console app and a windows app). If the user runs the executable normally, I want the application to run in a command window. If the user runs the executable with a specific parameter, say: program.exe -visual I want the program to run at the command line, but open a windows form where it spits out various output (different output than that going to stdout, so I'm not looking for a redirect solution). My first instinct was to have the console application start up the GUI and then update a textbox via a delegate function. Of course, for the GUI to update itself, and for the console app to continue its work, the GUI would need to be in its own thread. What is the best way of going about this Should the console app spawn a thread which then calls Application.Run(...)     - Help with custom dll problem Odd problem. Select the reference in Solution Explorer's References node and verify that Copy Local is set to True. That's the default. Now look in your project's Bin\Debug and Bin\Release folders for that copy. Delete it. Maybe the timestamp of that copy is messed up. Moved to C# IDE forum.     - Converting from unsigned char* to Bitmap Hello all, I'm having trouble converting an unsigned char* into a Bitmap image. I have an unsigned char* in managed c++ code, which points to a 1280x1024 image with 8bppIndexed as the pixel format. When I display the image using the raw unsigned char* I'm getting the right image. In order to display the image on a C# console window, I need to convert the image from my C++ code in a System: rawing::Bitmap object. To do this, I have attempted to cast the pointer to IntPtr: IntPtr a_image_data = (IntPtr) const_cast < unsigned char *>( image_data ); //image_data is the unsigned char* I then used a delegate and event pair to send this IntPtr to the C# side of my project, and it retains the same IntPtr value. When I recreate the image using the IntPtr, it gives me an unrelated image. System.Drawing. Bitmap RetrievedImage = new System.Drawing. Bitmap (1280, 1024, 8, System.Drawing.Imaging.     - Question on architecture for an Active Directory API I'd like to create a wrapper API for active directory which has a member function which accepts a structure as a parameter and outputs the structure as the return value. The structure would be customized by the developer who is using the API to include only data members which the developer requires. I'd like the member function to determine what data members the structure contains and, thus, which data to pull from the active directory. (I figure this will speed processing time as the developer using the API will only have to make one trip to the member function and get all the required data at once.) I figure that the member function will accept a parameter of type object to represent the structure and use reflection to determine what data members it contains. If you're having to fight to use C# over VB6 or Borland C++ then I'd recommend leaving the company and working for a company where you don't have to waste so much time.

You can say that one of the big advantages of C# and .NET is that it's very easy to accommodate modern versions of the other two languages you mentioned (VB.NET and C++/CLI) once you're working in the .NET framework.

I forgot to mention that we develop SW and GUIs for HW control, do u still think that C# is the best
