Every time I open a solution in visual studio it tells me one of the projects is customised and presents a security risk.

I did a quick google and found http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1922041&SiteID=1&pageid=0#1709534 , but that provides no solutions for the problem.

an image of the error can be seen at http://placidbox.com/vs.png

this happens when loading/creating any project, and is damned annoying.

I'm running VS2005 with all service packs and hotfixes, on vista 32bit business upgrade, if that matters.

If you select the second option in the dialog you should not get prompted again about it for the current project. Is this a custom project template that you created or modified

VS will also warn you when you are opening a project from a potentially unsafe location. You can remove that warning by going to Tools\Options -> Projects and Solutions -> Warn user when the project location is not trusted.

The peculiar issue with you is that your document directory should be just fine. However you did say that this was an upgrade to Vista and that might be the issue. The Documents and Settings directory of XP has been replaced with the Users directory. For backwards compatibility Vista maintains the Documents and Settings directory but it is a link back to the Users directory. However VS doesn't realize that and assumes it is a network drive I suspect. Change your project path in VS to point to the Users directory and see if that cleans things up for you.

Thank you for your reply.

unfortunately, this isn't the untrusted project location error, and turning that warning off doesn't help.

Opening ANY project, or creating one brings up a MSBuild security error, saying that a file referenced (which seems to be nothing, if you look at the screenshot I posted) is in an untrusted directory.

Although I can skip this dialog most of the time, I'm a perfectionist and want to get rid of it Smile
Sadly, I may just have to do a clean install of windwos.

Did you verify that your VS installation no longer pointed to D&S for the project, item template and project template directories (Tools\Options) I'm wondering if that is causing all your problems. Like I said, in Vista it is a link rather than an actual directory now. Explorer will display it but you can't click on it.

As for the clean install I personally never upgrade OSes anymore partially for this reason. Security also can be a mixture between XP/Vista. Finally there are all the legacy XP directories/features that might be lying around. I, and it is just my opinion, believe it is better to have a clean, correct OS install rather than an upgrade. This was especially prevalent back during the W2K -> XP upgrade process when XP locked down most of the system files and registry, except if you upgraded from W2K :{

I have the same problem (Visual Studio C# Express 2005 on Vista), and googled the problem too, but neither of the solutions suggested worked.

D&S
Documents and settings

I have tried pointing all three fields, Project template, Item template and Projects location to E:\Visual Studio and several other locations.

Have you changed your default project directory (Tools -> Options -> Projects and solutions -> Visual Studio projects location) or something similar
Would anyone be kind enough to mail me a clean version of CurrentSettings.vssettings for Visual Studio C# Express 2005
I could post it for download at http://www.orkan-productions.com/CurrentSettings.vssettings if anyone needs it.

Guess we'll have to map the problem before we can find a solution.

You can just reset all the settings by going to Tools\Import & Export Settings -> Reset all settings to reset all settings to their initial install state. Deleting the settings file doesn't help a lot as VS caches a copy of it elsewhere.

Yes, I've done complete resets of the IDE and a reinstall of VS. I've verified that all directories are their vista equivilants, even in odd places like the MSBuild settings. As much as I'd like to get to the bottom of this (mostly because its such an odd error), It looks like I'll have to just do a clean install.

See if the disk you are savning on is primary partion, a system partion or an active partion.
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management.
