Hello all,

i am learning C# and, i want to slowly create a RPG, i dont need it to be graphic intensive, it is my first, i want to create something quite small just to get an idea of how to do it.

I would love to make something like a dungeon crawler or, something like Might&Magic (1 thru 5). I hope you see what i mean !

Does anyone have a link or a book that has a tuto that would make me create something like that

My problem is that i dont really know what it needs to be done and where to start Smile

Thanx for your help Smile

I'll bite since no one seems to be offering any help. You have a couple of different options to learn the technology with gaming. I would start basic and work your way up from there. Start learning how to work with Direct X for graphics and keep getting more advanced as you go. There are game development sites such as gamedev.net to help you on your way in regards to general principals. For .NET development I recommend you download XNA. XNA is a Visual Studio set of projects for creating PC and XBOX 360 games using Visual C# express.

I would also recommend the coding 4 fun website. That site has a bunch of fun and interesting projects that can be completed in a relatively short amount of time. It has projects ranging from game projects to integration with popular services to working with Robots and Home Automation. It provides a fun and interesting way to learn C#.

For your work, the most interesting on the coding 4 fun blog is the Crusader (C#) tutorial but most of the others should help with other concepts.

Ah might and magic the early ones just use pictures that change as you hit keys. Keeping it simple like that wont be terribly hard, the game logic will be much larger and more complex then you think. Seemingly simple games turn out to be more complicated then you think. For a first role playing game I would keep it very simple or make something like space invaders first to understand the basics. Might and magics are much to complicated to start at in my opinion

A Senior Design Team at the Milwaukee School of Engineering made a gaming engine perfect for what you're asking. Unfortunately they haven't updated their website
http://jade.msoe.edu/engine/

But I know they have completed it. I saw the demo at the Senior Design show...plus they're friends of mine. I'm not sure if they have this project as open source, but I'll talk with them and get back to you. The IDE was a simple way to create objects and interactions and also allowed for easy additional of scripting to make more complex interactions.

As i can see, this could be harder then i though, well, i have been looking alot for a tuto that would do the job but without any luck. I think it is a better idea to start with a text based one.... But, still, i dont know where to start Smile

I'm not sure if there is a port of it to .net, but there is the NetHack/Roguelike engine that basically requires you to create a front-end/GUI to interact with the player. A project like that would allow you to focus on one area, then later look into designing your own engine. If it doesn't have any ports, it still might be possible to use them, but it would force you to find the engine compiled as a library and making P/Invoke calls to it
