Problem:

Visual Studio 2005 IDE Freezes then crashes.

Causes:

Click on View \ Server Explorer,

Try to open a Dataset in the Solution Explorer,

Try to create a DataBase Connection.

So Far I have:

Proved i can connect to the DataSource with MSMSE,

Compiled and Ran the WebApp and it still runs fine (including database connections),

Installed the Visual Studio SP1,

Tried to open the Server Explorer in an empty project,

Repaired Visual Studio 2005,

Reset all settings in Visual Studio.

Any help would be appreciated

Regards

Peculiar. A great many people use SE all the time to connect to databases without any problems.

What OS are you running If you're running Vista did you also install the SP1 Refresh for Vista What edition of VS2005 are you running

What database, version and edition are you targeting Are you running as an admin or a limited user Does it happen on all databases or just a particular one When you connect through MSMS are you using the same account that you use to run VS2005

In SE do you have any entries at all Can you open SE without a crash Does it crash if you try to open a DB in SE Does trying to create a dataset have any real impact on whether it'll crash or not

Did you look at the list of known issues with VS2005 at http://connect.microsoft.com (search for "server explorer crash") to determine if your issue has already been reported, identified and resolved

Re: Visual C# IDE IDE Crashes when trying to accessing Database

- I'm running Windows XP

I have now tried uninstalling VS2005 and SQL Server Express and reinstalling them both, this didn't help, still open a empty VS IDE and Click Tools\Connect to database... and the IDE will freeze then eventually come up with "Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I am using SQL SERVER Express (SQL Server 9.0.1399) and

I can connect into the SQL Server using MSMS with windows authentication as the local user and the VS2005 IDE should be doing the same.

It seems that any attempt to access a datasource in the IDE results in a crash although the program compiles and runs fine and access the databases while running.

I doubt it matters but you should probably upgrade to SQL 2005 SP2 when possible. It shouldn't cause a crash in SE.

There might be a corrupt entry in SE. Close VS, delete the SE settings file and then open VS again. The settings can be found at: Documents & Settings\<user>\Application data\Microsoft\Visual Studio\8.0\ServerExplorer.

Do you get any meaningful information from event viewer after the crash

Hi Peter,

I reccommend you clicking on the "Send error report" button on the crash dialog when you see it and then opening the event viewer under the "Application". Typically, event ID would be 1001 for an event like this. The info looks like the following and the big number you see after the "fault bucket" lets us sometimes identify the problem you may be seeing.

Fault bucket 355320355.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

thanks
